...or are the symptoms simply significantly different or under-recognised in females? I'm wondering what you think about this.

There are some dyscalculia-related materials out there now, notably those produced by Ronit Bird.

It was in secondary school, for me. A relative happened to read about dyscalculia (which was even less known then, of course, though the phenomenon was described rather a while back in the scientific literature) and immediately recognised me in the description. She then went to talk to the person wh...

With the dyscalculia thing, I also often transpose or mix numbers in a sequence up. For example a sequence that reads 34356, I will often read 34536. It makes doing things like reading phone numbers difficult - I have to concentrate on each specific number individually, forgetting the others in the...

The question of whether one offends people on a regular basis is also quite tricky, mind you. Being able to answer this truthfully, in full awareness, would depend on how truthful or open the people one might offend are. It's quite possible to offend someone without knowing you did so, since many pe...

I also have dyscalculia. I left school being able to add and subtract (which is always much more difficult than adding) within 10, and being able to recognise greater and lesser quantities. I can also count (recite numbers; they don't actually mean much to me beyond a certain number). That was prett...

Generally, in order for me to learn how to get to a place, I have to find it myself. If I follow someone somewhere, it's very common that I won't actually learn how to get there, and then I get comments like "We've gone there 3 times - how can you not know how to get there?" I wonder whet...

My sense of direction is poor and I'm wondering whether a GPS would help. Would poor map reading skills be a barrier to using one? I am not sure how a GPS would explain things . A GPS certainly doesn't help me; I'm completely incapable of reading maps, GPS or no GPS. I personally orient myself with...

I understand why this is considered manipulative; rather than asking someone to do something directly, the speaker "beats around the bush". This is done in the name of politeness, but it certainly doesn't always come across as such! My (tween) son really doesn't do well with this kind of t...

I struggle with this also — always have, probably always will, even though I do prefer a neat environment by far. In the past, I have, at times, had help with this, but I also find it distracting/difficult to have a person come over to tidy and clean. I seem to be unable to "simply put things b...

I am undiagnosed. Personally, I tend to look "in the general direction" of the eyes (alternating between the point between the eyebrows and the nose) some of the time, around the space in which I am talking to the person some of the time, and actually into the person's eyes very occasional...

Is she getting enough sleep, even though she gets up a lot earlier now? If so, do you think it might be possible for her to engage in a range of solitary activities you agree on during those hours, and, for instance, agree for her to stay in her room or a specific area you agree on? When you say she...

My feeling is: If a formal diagnosis doesn't serve any purpose, why spend the money? There are many "self-diagnosed" people here. Join the club LOL I happened to have been diagnosed at a very young age--and I feel somewhat fortunate for that. I really need to go to bed now. It is very lat...

In your country, then, you have to be proficient in maths to graduate secondary school? It seems like you've been able to obtain some sort of decent qualification. I sense that many people in European countries go for something like "secretarial" or something like "x-ray technician&q...

You seem like you might be from the UK. Am I right? I am an American, so I'm not as knowledgeable about the UK educational system as a person from the UK. If you're in the UK, did you eventually get "O" or "A" levels? Or some sort of vocational qualification? You folks in the UK...
