I want to switch over to Xubuntu. Just need help.

I check out the site and it says to run the install it i need 128 MB of ram. Can I still use it with only 128 MB of RAM cause my PC can't handle?

Most computers should run Xubuntu. 1st download Xubuntu off the internet.

Downloading the file should take 30 minutes. Afterwards load up Roxio or Nero Burning Suite and burn the Xubuntu images on cd. {The file you downloaded is a .iso image .}

After that reboot your pc with the CD inside. Then when the menu pops up point to Install Xubuntu and type enter.

After a few minutes you'll get an install screen Note if you still want to have Windows click on install Xubuntu side-by-side with Windows. Pulling the slider back or forth pending on how mich you want your linux partition.

Or if you want the computer to be purlely xubuntu have it take up the entire drive. I hope this helps. Congrats on making the switch to Free Computing.

I actully had puppy linux it crashed again, Love Ubuntu but my PC didn't make requirements.

If you have 128MB of RAM I'd actually recommend against Xubuntu- it'll run, sure, but performance won't be great. I'd suggest a minimal-install and then adding LXDE or (even better) a lightweight window manager of your choice. IceWM and Openbox are two of my favorites.

Fluxbox works well as a lightwieght GUI.

What is the model number of your computer. For less than $20 you can upgrade your memory to at least 256MB and be able to run Xubuntu with everything.

Otherwise a minimum install. The use of Opera as a web browser is a good choice with that hardware. Abiword and Xcef Music Player should also be lightwieght enough and both programs come with the O.S.

Yeah, it's nice. Pretty similar to Openbox.

I'd recommend that doesn't need that amount of memory. Maybe needs less than that. Windows 98SE needs around 24-32MB RAM.

Depending on the computer, a memory upgrade could prove expensive as sourcing the correct modules to do so. With a computer of that age, I would consider maxing out the RAM. WIth 128MB RAM, you could easily have 2xPC66 64MB modules. I would try to get 128MB modules for a potential 256/384MB RAM... Nothing wrong with PC100/PC133 memory though.
With more and more Operating systems needing more memory, I would prioritise this and maybe use 98se/2000 or XP at a pinch

On a similar subject, I'm currently clearing up an old laptop of mine (with the same specs of 128mb of ram) to give to my grandma. How easily can I put Ubuntu onto a 2gig jump drive to load onto it (since it can't currently access the internet).

It will install as any other drive. Make sure you install the grub loader to the jump drive though.

Or did you mean a liveUSB? in system administration you will find a create startup disk.

I tried to install xubuntu and everytime I install it step 2 just stays there and I can't go to step 3 it acts like it goes to stap 3 but refreashes step 2 I ran a check on the CD for any problems their was none. What is wrong?
