After almost 40 years programming I don't think I've ever met an OS I really liked.

Pick had some nice features, but I still vote for Linux.

In terms of actually getting work done, I doubt there is very much difference between operating systems or implementations. So much energy goes into style over substance.

I'm predicting a land slide victory for linux in the polls.

Just because most of us here are linux geeks.

I use OS X, Linux, and Windows.

Windows has games, and it has the same programs everyone else uses which sometimes makes life more convenient.

OS X is the most stable and reliable, and the least hassle to work with.

Linux has the most sensible UI (GNOME 2), gets out of my way, and is faster than the others.

I will actually use whatever is loaded on the machine in front of me I have no beef against windows 7 which is actualy quite good, Mac OSX is OK most forms of *NIX work well but my OS of choice is eComStation.

I chose Mac OS X because it's the only one from that list that I've used and that doesn't suck. If I had used Linux or FreeBSD, I might have picked those. I plan to get a new PC and install Linux on it sometime soon (like in May), and I want to try out AmigaOS sometime, just because I like things that are nontraditional. I've looked at screenshots of AmigaOS and it seems to have applications and features that are completely different from anything in Windows or Unix.

Hello everyone, I haven't posted in quite a while and now I'm back!

On topic, I voted Linux because I really like the fun of it especially distro's like Arch, Gentoo, or Slackware (though I also like Debian and Ubuntu for server usage and the large amount of stable packages).

However, I also have Windows available just so I retain compatibility because I might be getting a job this summer that would utilize ASP.NET. I really don't like it that much. It's basically unstable (which isn't necessarily bad, IMO), but since it's proprietary you have little control over fixing issues (which makes Arch and Gentoo a lot of fun for the Desktop).

More recently, I also got a MacBook Pro so I could use GarageBand but I ended up liking a lot of aspects of OS X. I think OS X is very stable and perfect for certain users, but for more of a power user like me, I slightly prefer Linux more, but not by much because of GarageBand (no recording software for Linux works as well in my opinion, though I do like the idea of JACK and all the programs that utilize it).

I think Ubuntu is going in the right direction for the desktop, however I've been testing Lucid and it's so well integrated it's almost like the perfect operating system and I think by it's release, it will be very usable for a lot of people that Karmic wouldn't have been usable for. I also like the new color scheme, because I got sick of the old orange/brown one.

It's good to be back.

I've been thinking I'd like to try Linux but I'm afraid I'd end up messing up my computer. I like Windows though, it surprisingly hasn't caused me any trouble so far.

I've only used Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and now Windows Vista. I know how the people who design the interface think, so it is easy enough for me to figure out how the systems function based on their usual design commonalities.

Thirty years of writing software has taught me that if the code's not open it's wasted effort.

While I personally prefer Windows (I run XP and 7), I can't say that it is the "best". Different operating systems are good for different things. Linux is free software (but it isn't compatible with everything), Windows is compatible with nearly all software packages and games (but can be prone to malware), and Macintosh based operating systems are easy to use and difficult to screw up (but are not compatible with everything)
