Best OS is no OS.
Write programs that ONLY contain all the code they use.
Its much faster that way.
Ironically, It seems that all the programs are smaller too.
(Rarely over 64Kilobytes in my experience!)
Bootup times are so much less than a second, maybe one clock cycle.

If you need to run many programs,
the bootloader menu is smaller than all the programs too. Even if gui like PalmOS.

And, written in assembly language, they will run faster than in any other language ever,
and they will require less memory too.
That's why computers were faster in 1980 with only 1 MIPS, more or less.

You mean that there are other OS's than Linux!! !! Surely, that's not possible.

I run Ubuntu 9.10 at present on all three of my PC's. I refuse to have anything to do with uSoft's garbageware! BTW I programmed my first computer in 1963 and Fortran was my milk language. Now I program in Python, or C++ if needed.

I prefer Ubuntu Linux but I boot into Windows when needed. Like a certain Game or Program.

It's difficult to determine whether an OS is good or not — it all depends on what you are going to use it for.
Gaming — Windows.
Programming and hacking — Linux and occasionally Windows.
Image editing — Windows and Mac OS X?
Casual use — All of them, depends on the user.

Yes, but when it comes to e.g. Delphi (which is Kylix on Linux, and sadly not supported anymore) you'd have to use Windows. Just one of many examples.

OS X is more used with Obj-C, if I'm right? Well, if that's the case, it's perfect for it. However, I'm pretty sure a «standard» programmer would not have chosen OS X for most of his tasks, since most of them are suited for Windows or one of the Linux distributions.

Aha, interesting. Which operative systems used for what isn't clearly my field of knowledge. Thanks for enlightening me, I learn something new every day. (I've never used a Mac, so I shouldn't have mentioned anything about it at all, actually.)

Of the "non-free OSes" I choose Windows over OS X. OS X may be scriptable but I personally despise the dock with a passion, the file-system and NOT BEING ABLE TO MAXIMISE MY PROGRAMS! Windows 7 looks better and has a larger library of software and games.

Of the "free OSes", Oracle seems to be doing all they can to kill OpenSolaris, Haiku is a cute toy but not yet a usable desktop OS and whilst I use Linux as my default desktop - from a technical point of view the *BSD family gets my vote. The most professional put together of the lot, Linux development from the sounds of things is becoming more slapdash and suffering from some serious regression.

I answered on behalf of my son who thinks Linux is the best, but he'd rather design his own.

I found that the best OS for me is Windows 7.

The best OS's are UNIX or UNIX-like. The OS's that top the list are Linux and BSD.

I'm a big fan of Linux, but I dual-boot XP for old software I still use and isn't compatible with WINE.
