I just got a new Netbook
A few days back I got a Acer Aspire One Netbook from the store. Had the Typical Win7 Starter so I decided to make a Factory Restore Backup on a CD. Then I loaded XP on a 30GB Partition and put a 120GB for Ubuntu NBR 10.04. I love it. Ubuntu runs very fast!! Heck its so fast on this netbook that they it doesn't show the splash screen. I also really like the way the menus are set up to be really easy + customizable on this netbook. I still wonder why Intel and Microsoft tell people that Netbooks aren't speedy enough to be Main PC's. Maybe its because they make more money off of Traditional PC's.
Since I'm using this as my de-facto main computer maybe I should also see how the new Linux Mint 9 should work out and loaded several distros in VirtualBox and see how they fare.
I wish they still sell them with SSD in them, I'm not hardware savvy enough to replace internal bits in laptops or netbooks. Dell does one with Ubuntu on it, but it's not as good as meee lateee EEE and it's at the same price. What a rip off! And what happened to all those ARM chipped netbooks they've been promising to us for two years now?
As for why aren't the industry marketing them as "real PCs", I suspect you are right - they are cannibalising into their sales for over-priced and under-preforming business machines. Except I don't think it is Intel and Microsoft who are pushing the message, but the OEMs.
I wouldn't try virtualbox on a netbook, unless you got one of the Zxxx atom chips on the netbook, it's not going to include vt-x virtualisation. That meaning it would be deadslow.
