It actually happened with both of the PC laptops I owned - The plastic around the hinges, on the screen side and the base side, cracked. Eventually the hinges broke off. Cheap sh** they make these days. That's why I don't buy inexpensive computers anymore.

After going through three MacBook that each lasted me 4-6 months before dying due to simple wear and tear issues (a fourth lit itself on fire, but that's another story), that's why I got a ThinkPad and haven't looked back. Titanium, carbon fiber and magnesium means I don't have the scratch hardness of the aluminum unibody Macbooks, but it does hold up much better in the long run to the abuse of my day to day use. :D

Oddly enough, my old black MacBook lasted 18 months, much longer than the new unibody MBPs last.

(a fourth lit itself on fire, but that's another story),.

How did it do that?

How did it do that?

I was sitting and using it, on battery with nothing conected, and smoke started coming out of the Ethernet port. The actual logic board started cooking chips - fortunately I cooled it down before the aluminum melted.

That's funny. I've been using my Macbook for over two years and it hasn't died yet.

I spend probably about 5 hours a day on my Mac.

You know what laptops are crap? Those flaming Dells. No, literally, flaming Dells...

To find that image, I typed "flaming laptop" into Google, and guess what ad came up? Laptop Deals From Dell

BTW, I've had my MacBook for about 3-4 years now and it's fine. I use it for hours and hours every day. I also upgraded the RAM to 4GB and upgraded the hard drive to 320GB. It's still got pretty much the same spec as most new PC laptops.

I spend probably about 5 hours a day on my Mac.

4-5 hours, with another 4-5 hours of being thrown around without much of a protective case around it. That's how I discovered that the older polycarbonate MacBooks are actually tougher than the newer aluminum MacBook Pros.
