Computers are devices that are made up of many components, so usually when a computer stops working, most of the components are still good.

Exactly what is it that your computer does which leads you to say it's broken?

^ That strikes me as some good advice, although I've never tried that myself. But a friend of mine says he has a computer where he's been replacing the parts for so long its chassis is from 1998. So it can work.

Alternatively, you could buy a netbook--they are much cheaper.

Goto a computer store get a new power supply as your first test. Keep the receipt. If that does not work return the power supply. If it works it will cost less than a whole new computer.

First I would check to make sure the video card is clean, and seated properly and nothing came unplugged from it. Computers often won't boot up if something is up with the video card.

I'd also do much the same for other devices. Push on the memory, cards and connectors and such to make sure they are seated. Gently clean the dust out of the fans and such. Don't used pressurized air, you don't need to get it all, just the clumps.

If that doesn't work then it could be a power supply issues or hard drive issue. These are far more likely to go out than a motherboard. I've only had one motherboard go out on me because one of the capacitors went bad, and in that case it made strange high pitched noises.

The memory is also more likely to go bad.

i think its a dead board. just go buy your self a AMD board if you need a computer but cant afford a new one.

OR

if you wan to get something thats nice, fancy, and fast then get your self a Intel computer. they run real slick and always run well for me once i get it setup.

HOWEVER

if you think the processor is dead then please tell us what processor and board you are using along with some Specification.

im mostly concerened about the processor and its socket.

like is it a Amd Athlon XP on socket 462

Some machines (like Dell boxen) have LEDs which flash error codes, when possible, to indicate failure areas. Anything like that available?
