Linux install failing

Hey.

When you can get it installed its like the best thing ever.
But to get it installed... Impossible (For me that is).

Im trying to install Kubuntu 10.10 on my desktop:

3GB DDR2 Ram
Nvidia GeForce 7500LE 256Mb
Intel VIIV Dual Core CPU @ 2.8 Ghz

The setup went fine yesterday.
It went like a brease.
But I installed Kubuntu in a new partition and thought that GRUB would not work if it was in the new partition, so I thought I would install it into Windows's partition. I did and now Kubuntu is there but I cant boot into it.
I could fix it, but that would require another DVD R which I dont exacly want to waste if I can help it as I need to use the rest for other things. I will not be able to get some a long time now. (I dont have much time to get them for at least 5 days)

I wish I had nerver ever upgraded to Natty Narwal.
So heres what happens when I attempt to install kubuntu 10.10 on my machine:

I put in the Kubunutu 10.10 DVD and boot it. It boots fine. It all goes fine..... UNTIL THE SPLASH SCREEN.
The splash screen is on for about 7 minuets and freezes after 7 minuets. The part where it hangs at is * Checking Battery State....

The PC works fine. It has had Kubuntu on it before, but it had Natty Narwal, (its even had 10.10 on it before) the worst build I have ever used. So I formated the HDD and then I had to wait 1 month to get the time to go buy some DVD R's.

I have tried Backtrack 5: Failed due to not being compatibile with my GPU (Artifacts where all over the screen).
Kubuntu (The one im trying to install now): Completed the setup yesterday but installed grub in the wrong partition... FAILED

I have even tried Trinity Dibien: Half Success. Would loved to had used (But XORG was being rubishy to me and I could not get it to work properly with my 7500LE which prevented me from being able to start my GUI. Cornflake did give me some advise on how to get it working, but right now I want to try Kubuntu first and then Trinity on another HDD and see which suits me.)

I absolutely love Linux.
I have been having to use Windows on this machine for the past month.
I so miss Linux. Windows is just not fit for what I want to do, neither does it suit me.

throw the kubuntu install on a spare USB drive. no need to waste a DVD.

Shot in the dark, but try booting the install kernel with "noacpi". And make sure your laptop is plugged in and in a reasonably well ventilated place; it's possible that CPU temperature will get out of hand. And *don't* do this unattended; if you see or smell something bad, pull the power and batteries out.

Ok, thanks for the advise.
Il try it once I have finished some coding.
It is a Desktop.
Think it would still help?

When it freezes can you ctl alt f1 to a vt? If so, log in and

dmsg ¦ tail

Post the output (or take a photo).

One more thing. You may need to:

dmesg ¦ tail ¦ less

:)

You might as well avoid the pointless step of piping output through tail and just do dmesg | less instead, because at least you'll then be able to read the whole thing. :wink:

Any joy with the investigation of Xorg.0.log, as per your other thread?

Lol i suppose piping tail through less is a little pointless but you are still able to read the whole log. Just one of my many bad habits :(

:lol: It's a bit worse than a bad habit because unless told otherwise, tail will just pipe the last ten lines. Clues about an error could be present well before that.

Lol you are right, what I meant to say was dmesg ¦ less sorry for the mix up.

Im going to try that later on this week, thanks for the advice :)
