There’s a new Kickstarter campaign that promises to launch a personalized satellite into orbit for 300 bones.
The KickSat project is headed by [Zac Manchester], [Mason Peck], [Justin Atchison] and a few more contributors hailing from Cornell University. Their goal is to launch a CubeSat filled with hundreds of postage stamp-sized satellites and release these ‘Sprites’ into low Earth orbit.

//found on hack a day//
i have pledged 75 bucks to the proect for the sake of getting the replica,
they also write your name on a sattelite if you pledge 25 bucks or more (though do so out of intention to support them, your name will be burning up in the atmoshpere in either a couple of days or a couple of months)

Let me know when they offer KH-11 or later, and electronic surveillance satellites for $300 each.

This is a terrible idea. There is already too much junk up there--we do not need hundreds of postage stamp (ie: nearly impossible to track) satellites adding to it. One of those could cause serious damage to a satellite or, worse, the ISS.
Plus these are overpriced. This company is getting at least a 200% profit margin. (Assuming a precisely 1 kg CubeSat on an average priced rocket, carrying 100 of these microsatellites)

the maximum orbit time till they are burnt up is 3-4 months at most, at an ideal deployment it would be a matter of days for the small sattelites to be burnt.
as for the profits, they are developing and launching several hundred stamp sattelites for about 30k if ESA were this cheap we would be on mars by now,
also remember that at minimum they would have to produce 300 sattelites, 300 replicas to the people buying the sattelites and the custom silkscreen with the individual names.
not to mention the people that decide to code their own sattelites (all the code needs to be verified and it requires extra hardware, hence the price tag of a 1000 dollars, anything above that is for your enjoyment only)
obviously it is a small step towards a greater purpose,
but if one assumes proper production facilities large swarms of sattelites could be launched to gather immensely precise global data in a variety of ways
all for a lot less than government programs today (each module only wheighs 1.33kg, universities frequently launch this format)
