Ubuntu linux is very friendly user, and a lots of games are fully compatible into Wine. I know gamers who use it.

Modified version of OS X for PC computer still contain bugs and sometime it is slow, so you'll probably get as much bugs as XP.

I got a G4 and I really like Ubuntu more than OS X, so I'll sell my Mac to get another PC.

if you are big on games, linux doesnt have much to offer.

Even though one of the best games in the history of gaming is available specifically for linux, Savage 1 || 2, most other games require some tweaking to get them to run on linux platforms.

I found that the main source of trouble with gaming on a linux platform is gettitng the video drivers to work. If you can get over that, then it might be manageable.

OS X gets the job done for games.. I dont know about the pc-port though. I hadnt even heard of it until i read atxa's post.

If you have the money... get a mac...

but if you dont, just get a pc and load that thing with virus scanners, and firewalls.... and stop downloading illegal material. Thats the main cause of most pc problems. oh and remember to turn your pc off frequently, or at least disconnect it from the internet.

hope this helps

The best way to avoid problems is to use VMWare Workstation, keep your host clean only for games and use virtuals machines for p2p stuff, internet, chat ...

When it get corrupt or infected, delete it and do a cut and paste of the VM that you previously did a snapshot when it was installed (even you can do a snapshot of a VM who is already in use).

I use a lot VMWare and P2V, in my case it's a must. Within it, I use XP, Win2k3, Debian and tried Free BSD.

There is a free version for Ubuntu, it's VMWare Server, you can use VMWare Player too but you can't create virtual machine into it.

If you don't want VMWare you can do a multiboot but it's longer than using P2V and VM.

Personally, I recommend a combination of Windows and CoLinux. You really have to patient with CoLinux as it is difficult to set up, but it's well worth it. Nothing's cooler than using all KDE apps, then opening the Windows start menu when you want to play Half-Life 2.

All new macs will happily run XP as well as OSX.

I recently got a macbook pro, because I knew I'd have the safety net of XP if I didn't like OSX. So far, I've only needed to boot into XP a few times, and each time it felt really clunky and nasty by comparison. OSX is just a sexier experience all-round, and technically it's lightyears ahead of the competition.

But if you mainly use your PC for games, I reckon that XP is still (sadly) the best option, so you might want to figure out a way of keeping XP under control. Like another poster said, be really careful about what .exes you run, and keep your PC behind a firewall. An XP machine directly visible to the internet will get pwned in the time it takes you to blow your nose.

Easy. OS X is better than windows because it is not windows.

I've heard good things about OS X. But Macs are too expensive.
