Okay, I have an Acer Aspire with a built-in "Crystal Eye" webcam. I've never used a webcam before in my life. How does one operate it?

I had an Acer Aspire One, which I ran FreeBSD on. I got the webcam to work on it, so there should be no problem getting it to work with Linux.

My suggestion is you try the Ubuntu forums, upon failing that, try the Gentoo forums. I remember Gentoo had excellent forum support, and since it is still Linux, some of it may be applicable (i.e what kernel options you need [being Ubuntu they'd likely already be enabled] what drivers you need, and what programs to install).

What do you want to do with it? I have Mint (based off of Ubuntu) on an Aspire TimelineX and the webcam works fine. If you want to video chat then download Skype. If you want to just take pictures or record video then download Cheese. Both are pretty intuitive to use.
