I'm a fan of SLED, Ubuntu, and recently Sabayon.

Linux is flawed, it was never meant to be a desktop environment. By selling itself as a Desktop it essentially makes Microsoft look even better, this is because the way it's going about Desktoping is ridiculious. Anyway that's the truth, thanks!

Care to elaborate on why you think this? I've been using Kubuntu linux on all my home computers for about 6 months now, and I think it's a wonderful desktop system. No Windows on any of my hard drives. I would agree that linux used to not be very desktop oriented, but it has improved greatly over the last couple years. It's even valid for a gaming system. I play Guild Wars and Civilization IV on my linux desktop at 1440x900 with all the goodies enabled and they look great.

If you ever see a 3D linux desktop like Beryl or Compiz in action they make Microsoft look like s***.

All that and free (as in beer) and free (as in speach) are wonderful things. Read your Windows license some time.

What windows manager are you using? Would I be right in thinking the K in Kubuntu is for KDE? Please forgive my ignorance, I've only ever used SuSE in anger.

Are you doing that with Cedega? What kind of performance hit would you say there is?
I've been toying with the idea of subscribing to that....

You would be right thinking Kubuntu is KDE based. Ubuntu is the most popular linux distro out there (ubuntu uses gnome, kubuntu uses KDE, and xubuntu uses xfce). I used to use SUSE, but I won't go back to it ever since Novell made that deal with Microsoft.

Yes, I'm using Cedega. Works beautifully. Actually upgraded my pc after switching to linux, so I can't really say how different the performance is since I haven't tested it. Just keep in mind nVidia works much better than ATI when it comes to cedega. I'm using a geForce 7600GT, planning on going SLI and getting a second monitor when I can afford it. Can't wait to see Guild Wars on two screens.

I don't mind communism when it works. Works when everyone involved in it is enthusiastic about it. :P

Congrats! I also run KUbuntu as my main distribution on my computer as well (with Windows only when required for school). I agree, they need to finish up KDE4 as from the previews and everything it just looks awesome. BTW, has anyone here had any success with XGL on Kubuntu? I played with it a few months ago but at that stage it just didn't really like my video card on my laptop (Mobile nVidia GeForce 2 Go 64mb). :)

Try Sabayon, it works BEAUtifully on the laptop I think you have. I did get XGL+Compiz working on SLED. BTW I'm pretty sure I have about the same computer you do but with a few upgrades.
