Java enabling browser

I've just finished a computer science course that included Java programming. We were told to install the Java Development Kit but NOT the Java Runtime Environment (JRE).

I still haven't installed the JRE, and so applets don't work on my computer.

Why do you think I was warned not to install the JRE? Will installing the JRE stop me from being able to compile and run Java programs?

And yes, I probably should know this already, and I probably should have asked before my course ended.

I have Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 1.5.0.9 btw

the jdk should include the runtime stuff in it. you should just install the jre if you can't get applets to load. your cs department didn't mean that you shouldn't have the runtime stuff, they just wanted you to have the jdk. people usually don't realize they're different.

I concur, it's difficult to find the right download on the Java site though, so many places to click :-D
