FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, New Jersey: The metallic, rocklike object that crashed through the roof of a home here was a meteorite, experts said Friday.

The announcement ended three days of mystery that began when the object, golf ball-sized but weighing about as much as a can of soup, was found by the homeowner Tuesday.

Rutgers University geologists Jeremy Delaney, Gail Ashley and Claire Condie and Peter Elliott, an independent metallurgist who studied the object, determined it was an iron meteorite because of its density, magnetic properties, markings and coloration.

It belongs to the family whose home was hit, but it is being kept for now in a secure location, Freehold Township police said.

Police have not released the name of the homeowner nor identified the neighborhood.

I had heard about this on the news, and I can never resist a geology-related post.

They have the ability to trace back to what "parent" asteroid or astroid groups that meteorite came from.

That rock is worth $100,000 in my estimation. So it will pay for the repair cost.
