Ubuntu isn't regarded very highly by a number of Free and Open Source Software people:

Ubuntu does something worse. It spies on its users. Malevolent functionality which is frequently part of proprietary software is rare in free software, but our defense is not perfect. One of the few examples of spyware in free software is Ubuntu.

IF this is true....one could use Startpage/Ixquick and their proxy to keep that info from Ubuntu. Then one can still benefit from this well developed distro.

Any readers, please comment on this idea.

Buried amongst the ravings on that Groklaw thread are the details that calling this additional stuff "spyware" is going a bit too far (since the source code is freely available), that it's installed in Ubuntu only (not the other *buntu variants), and that it's trivial to remove it anyway.
I see what RMS is getting at and he's not necessarily wrong, but it's from something of a purist viewpoint which would likely reject proprietary NVIDIA Linux drivers on the same principles.

I think calling it spyware is a stretch personally, compared to, say, doubleclick.net cookies. I don't have a problem with *buntu distros personally - while not purely GNU friendly they aren't exactly evil are they? Get a sense of perspective.

On my desktop I got Lubuntu 12.04, and my IBM ThinkPad runs LXpup. I suppose that I am in the minority, I actually love Ubuntu's unity interface. but I like LXDE and I want to run the same DE across all of my machines. and it is amazing with my solid state drive.

Up until a few months ago I used to run Ubuntu. Now I have a Mac, so I run OS X "Mountain Lion" as my main OS. I still have a couple of Ubuntu machines as well that I do specific things with. Also run Ubuntu in a virtual machine on the Mac.

I mainly run Windows - Windows 7 on the work machine and both home/work laptops and Windows 8 on my home machine (even after using it daily for a few months, I still prefer the classic Start menu to the Metro interface). I also have a Debian VM that I run off an external drive in VirtualBox.

OSX on my Macbook Air.

I think the Macbook Air line is the nicest system I've ever used (I've built custom linux/windoze boxes before too).

But the portability is insane. And for software development I don't need anything more.

On my laptop I have a dual boot configuration of Ubuntu 13.04 and Windows 8 Professional. Currently using the latter but I use both fairly regularly.

On my Raspberry Pi I have the stock Raspbian setup.

Mobile-wise I have Blackberry 6 on my 'phone and Blackberry Tablet OS 2.1 on my Playbook - not that you get a choice on either of these two devices.

Have in the past used more operating systems than I could care to name. Most recent OS I stopped using was OpenSuse.

Happily back dual booting Kubuntu and Windows 7 after swapping PCs with my wife. :P
