Back in the days that I used Windows regularly, Spybot S&D was the software that I always used, due to the fact that it was one of the ones that the company that I worked for suggested to the DSL users that I provided Helldesk for. MalwareBytes was the other product that we recommended.
That being said, Malware removal software is much like AV software in the fact that you have to keep the definitions up to date. Also Malware removal tools will usually only remove adware and other annoyances, of which could possibly negatively impact the performance of 'Free Version' software that you have downloaded, as oftentimes the malware is bundled with the 'Free Version' software that you have installed on your system. One way that you can tell that you're loading Searchbars, and other crap on your system is by CAREFULLY READING THE EULA OF THE SOFTWARE THAT YOU HAVE DOWNLOADED!! !!
Legitamate companies that provide Ad sponsored 'Free Versions' of their software, or software that comes bundled with dodgy applications like search toolbars and the like are legally required to state in their EULA that other software that will display ads, or add search bars to your browser is also being installed on your system . It may also ask you if you want to install a search toolbar on your browser. If it does, click the 'No' option, or deselect the install option. --Any decent browser these days already has one that's a part of the browser.
Barring this, I would like to point out yet again that with Linux, you don't have to worry about crap like this unless you're running dodgy Windows applications in WINE.
