Sorry if that's a stupid question, but I genuinely have no idea. I've heard about it, but I don't understand the concept. Someone explain it to me please?

You just posted a link to xkcd, where the latest comic is an explanation of the Heartbleed bug. Does that not explain it? Aside from xkcd, there must be literally thousands of web pages by now that answer the question "what is the Heartbleed bug?" So you would need to ask something much more specific to get a meaningful answer.

Probably written by Microsoft to frighten the millions of XP users into updating their operating systems now that XP is no longer supported.

I dough that Microsoft wrote it since it's been out since 2011. But I do believe that Microsoft did make a publicity stunt out of it to motivate people into upgrade their systems.
