I want to create a folder on my extsd card to put some data files but can't find any options anywhere to create folders. :? The only commands on the menu are copy, move, paste and delete. How do I create folders - it is a simple requirement but I can't find out how to do it. Surely I don't need to download an app to be able to do basic file management?

Well I should think it has but then again every flavour of Android can be a tad different. I checked on both my JB and KK builds for my Razr and both the stock file managers have the option under the menu to create a new folder. However mine is ROOTED and that may make a difference. I think your tablet is stock with ICS and I haven't had that version of Android on any of my devices.

Do yourself a favour and download Ghost Commander. It has two panes and you can copy files from one to another pane, create directories, etc. It is like the now ancient Norton Commander and is my file handler of choice. I would bet within 30 seconds of opening the app that you will be able to do far more then you are now stumbling about in the stock file manager. My 2 cents...

Thanks. I've downloaded it. It looks like a decent program, however I've hit a snag. I've got the /mnt/extsd/ folder open in the left pane. It lists the existing folders as /LOST.DIR and /Media - The latter I created on Windows and contains all my MP3 albums. I clicked the option at the bottom "7 MkDir" and told it to create a new folder called "Notes" but it responds Alert: Unable to create directory "Notes". It gives no other explanation. :? Could it be possible the sd card is mounted read only?

Ah! I think I've answered my own question, though not how to get around it... In ghost there is a button marked "External Card: Access files on the physical inserted SD card. May be read-only on some devices"

Why read-only? What use is that? ... but how come I could transfer folders/files to it from a USB stick - implying it isn't read-only? :?

Grab a copy of the "ASTRO File Manager" - that gives a view somewhat like Windows' Explorer.
Way before I rooted any device, it was just a case of navigating to where you want to create the directory, then tapping the menu, then tapping "New Folder". No problem, it just worked.
Dealing with the folders/contents is done via taps, dragging, and holding your finger on the item until a sub-menu pops up as required.

Or, if you're able to resolve the problem with mounting it under Windows, you can just plug it in and do it all from there - the device should appear like any other USB drive.

The "may be read-only" probably refers to systems that may mount partitions or have files on the external device set read-only for their own reasons.
It sounds like a general alert and not necessarily referring to something that exists on your device.
(I hate lazy messages like that :x )
