I was bored to death today and started googling random stuff on the internet. One of the Questions was this.

Can Win XP Pro run on a 60Mhz Socket 4 Pentium with 32MB Memory?

I then came acroos the answers on this website.[ The experiment was done by the same guy that got Win 98 running on a 386.]

www.winhistory.de/more/386/xpmini_eng.htm

I mainly thought about it because on the XP Readme, Retail Box and Ms website stated that a 233Mhz Pentium w/ 64MB memory
is the mininium. However Windows XP is based on the NT 5.0 kernel used in Windows 2000. Windows 2000 is able to install
with only 32MB Memory. [In fact a lot of win 2000 computers
coming from used computer shops[Especially Laptops.] come
with only 32MB of memory and later Pentiums. Windows also doesn`t detect your clock speed and only detects your processor
type. [Yes, a 486 was tested in the experiment but didn`t worked because it wasn`t a 64-bit processor.]

Heres was the mininium computer XP can run on

8Mhz Socket 4 Pentium[Underclocked Pentium 60.]
20MB Memory
ISA/VESA Board
VGA Video w/ 256 Colors/ 640*480 Res

The only fact is that it is SSSSSOOOOOO SLOW that it takes 30 Minutes to load Windows[Not including Norton Antivirus.] However i was thinking more of 2 Hours. Read the whole web page and you will found out how he did it.

I read this a few months ago, apparently these people were really bored out of their minds.. I've heard the minimum specs you can run Vista on are 256MB ram. But XP can use 20MB minimum. Crazy.

I run XP right now on my backup machine

Pentium III 512MB of ram. It makes me want to take a nap when I start the computer.

I ran XP on a HP Pavillion 6635 w/ a 533Mhz Celeron and 192MB Memory. I actually runs fairly fast. I can even run Openoffice, AVG Antivirus and Runescape at a reasonable speed.

8 MHz is slow even if you're planning to use Windows 95. I'd say Windows 3.1 would fit better.

Maybe not, I've actually installed W95 on a 8Mb/60Mhz pentium shortly after it was released and I felt that machine ran better with W95 then with W3.11. Othoh, W3.1 could run on a 1 Mb 80286 with a 30 Mb HD....

In a similar vein I installed Crysis on one of my old LAN gaming systems.

AMD XP 2500+ Barton (min. req. 2800+)
1Gb RAM (same as req.)
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128mb (Radeon 9800 Pro 256Mb min. req.)

Played quite well at 800x600 with everything on low. Might even allow some settings on medium.

I've done XP on P90 (UCed to 60) w/ 40mb RAM (48 with graphics taking 8).

You should try firefox on an HP Jornada 720 running JLime linux with 32mb RAM. Thats really slow. Can't afford £50 to upgrade it to 64MB though.
