I’m trying my best to describe my problem with out letting on too much that I don’t know jack about what I’m talking about. So please bear with me. :)

I wanted to get rid of some virus and spy ware stuff to make my computer run more smoothly. My father suggested that I reload the operating system. He ended up doing it himself because I kept asking for help every 3 minutes.

Now that that is over with, my computer works great… except for the sound. My dad said that I need to reinstall a sound driver and that I could find a serial number on the sound card. The problem is I don’t know which driver I need to download and I don’t know what a sound card looks like. I opened up my computer and found the disk reader, the hard drive, the video card and the big card in the back, but not any sound cards. Any suggestions?

Have a look behind the back of your pc where the wires connect. Check where there wire for your speakers goes. That will tell you which card is the sound card. You may not have a sound card though in which case the wire will connect to the motherboard. If that is the case you have "onboard sound" and you need to check the website of your motherboard manufacturer for the driver. Have you had a look around for any CD's which may have the drivers?

The wires do connect to the motherboard. I'll try to find the manufacturer's website. I couldn't find any CD's.

Thanks for the help :D

The drivers should be on the CD that came with the motherboard.

When I reinstalled xp, it didnt bother installing that. I later had to go find it.

Can you find either a motherboard manual (if you built it yourself) or the manufacturer and model of the whole machine. The manual should tell you what sound chip is on the onboard, for example the Realtek AC'97 chip, the model of machine would enable you to go to the manufacturers website and look it up.

I gave up looking for it and just bought a new soundcard. Thanks for the help, though
