Ubuntu Live CD questions

Long story; short, I suffered catastrophic hard drive failure this week and I'm running my entire desktop off of a Ubuntu Live CD I happened to have lying around. Is there some way to get around the configuration so that I can install WinRAR Flash, Java, and other video support on a flash drive until I can afford a new hard drive?

I'm not sure if that will serve any function since you're not running Windows, but there are portable versions of applications that can be run from the flash drive on any computer. My favorite collection is www.portableapps.com . There you'll find everything from a word processor to an audio editor.
