Not at all. I've installed several programs that aren't in the box, or even in add/remove, like Opera, Skype (now uninstalled- boycott Skype!) and Sage. It's not that hard unless you're too dumb to be able to use copy-and-paste.

Orwell, why are you boycotting skype? Did they do something shady

Someone else asked the same question already. I would prefer not to support a piece of software that helps the Chinese government spy on its citizens. Also, Skype is not even remotely secure- you have NO privacy in calls made over Skype.

Skype is an OK piece of software.

The pros of Closed-Source is that the company making the software can choice to only hire the best programmers. The flaws of Closed-Source is that not everybody can work on it.

The Pros of Open-Source is that everybody can work on the software. The cons is that anybody can also screw up the piece of software with crappy code & overflood the internet w/ crapware.

However I like Yahoo Messenger & Prigen. Both are wonderful pieces of software when it comes to calling up computers and instant messenging.

It's not quite as open as Wikipedia, or as open to vandalism. Open source development still has someone in charge of the project who decides what does or doesn't get into the program. So no, not anyone can screw up the software with crappy code, because there are highly competent programmers overseeing the development and vetting all submissions for quality.

Basically. The open-source software movement is the one example I have seen of successful communism. "From each according to his ability and inclination, to each according to his desire." Anyone with the ability and inclination is free to contribute to open source projects, and anyone who wants the benefits of such efforts is welcome to them. The only reason it works is because freeloaders like myself don't negatively impact contributors.
