Been getting sick of Windows. A lot of problems, been through 6 computers in the past couple years. They get slow, they get unresponsive, I get problems whenever I try to install certain programs (the computer tells me that I do not have administrator access... and there's only one account on the computer!!) Probably have a few bugs which the scanners do not detect. Shitty customer service on Windows and computer manufacturers' part. Hard drives failing and one tech tells me to open up computer, pull out the hard drive and blow on it while another tech tells me never to do this; it will make things worse.

Went into an Apple store the other day and talked to a specialist, and was pretty much sold. But I'd still like some more opinions from users. Can I get some pros and cons? That'd be kickass, thanks!!

Learned that in the store as well. They also said that a main issue is the registry that Windows has that Mac does not. True?

Half truths. there is nothing about OSX that precludes the development of viruses. And some do exist.

Its just that there are so few macs in use, developing viruses targetting them is like terrorists attacking Nome Alaska. Very far and out of the way.

Linux is the same.

Regarding the hardware, such as hard drives, they use the exact same manufacturers and models. You will not escape those problems by switching.


OSX

Pros:
99% less virus risks
lots of great software included
automatic drivers for most everything

Cons:
few options for customizing
lack of specialized and esoteric software
expensive or impossible to upgrade

Windows

Pros:
tons of software and games
wide compatibility
huge selection of hardware

Cons:
poor security
minimal software and drivers included
restrictive licence(regarding installs)

Linux

Pros:
unbeatable price
mechanism for security and safe software
very flexible regarding customization

Cons:
steep learning curve for problems
lack of commercial software
poor documentation

There are NO viruses for Macs. There are a few trojans but very very few are in the wild and all threats for Macs need to be installed by the user, so just do some research on software before you give it your admin password and you will be fine

UNIX (which OS X is based on) is very secure from viruses and hackers

It's a lot more reliable, too, and it dosent get slow and laggy like PCs do (you may need to repair the permissions once in a while but that's not hard at all and takes about 20 minutes).

Buy a Mac and enjoy it

Buy a Mac now, and you won't need to buy a new computer in at least 10 years.

Computers use will be completely different in 10 years. Hardware is on the cusp of massive changes.

Bug = a program with errors in the code that doesn't flow smoothly. Something like a game where maybe you jump and you gain full health where no health packs are available.
Virus = a program of varying size designed to attack systems in different ways. Maybe wipe contents on the hard drive or the values in CMOS to zero causing boot up failure.

Blowing on a hard drive should not be done, all the important parts are internal. Almost like expecting to get rid of a cold by taking a bath.

People are right about Windows, the famous DLL hell, and the registry, until Microsoft does something about this, and Windows always having a registry, it will always fail.

I use a Mac, but I don't always use the Mac OS.

Some advantages of using a Mac:
Almost never will you fins something that doesn't work on its own. You can run a Mac having absolutely no idea what you're doing and still probably not have any problems.

Apple produces good hardware. Not just in the specs, but in the overall quality, they do outperform companies like Dell and HP, even on similarly-priced models. I've heard too many horror stories of friends' Dells, never heard of anyone running into problem with their Mac.

Most stuff will be compatible, and pretty easily so. It takes care of all the drivers for you (before I tried out other OS's, I didn't even know what a driver was)

OS X is very secure, and, unlike other computer manufacturers, it is only sold on machines that are powerful enough to run it extremely well. There is an excellent fit between hardware and software.

If you want, you can run Windows or Linux on your Mac. Apple produces good hardware, so even if you decide you don't like OS X you still have an excellent computer.

Cons:
Very restrictive, and not customizable at all. If you don't like the look of the Mac UI, too bad.

If something doesn't work out of the box, there is next to no way of making it work.

Vendor lock-in. Do you want to be dependent on Apple Computers?

Can be on the pricey side.

No gaming.

Fewer choices in configurations, meaning you may have to settle for a computer that has lower specs than you want or fork over more money than you want to spend for a computer that has higher specs than you need because there's no in-between model. (My MacBook is pretty good, but it has a crappy graphics card, so no gaming even when I boot up in Windows)


I like my Mac, personally, and OS X is a very good OS. If your concerns are security, stability, and ease of use, Apple wins.

OS 7/8 FTW!

Out of curiosity, what do you even use on those? I don't think any new software has come out for OS7 this millennium. I mean, you'd be using really ancient versions of software that have no security patches whatsoever. And anything you did would not be compatible with other people's software- versions of Word probably are not compatible that far back.

Everything. Quicktime, AppleWorks, iCab. The list goes on forever.

Gotta look for some good classic games.

Nothing is absolute now is it? I now this is an old example, but it shows that it's been done before. Which means it can possibly happen again.

I definitely like Macs better than PCs.
