I'm using the gnome version of flash in Ubuntu 9.04.
It works well enough. there are some glitches at the beginning of some videos, but I havent seen anything major.
It was pointed out to me that if we dont start using the free ones, they will never get better, and we will never escape using closed source stuff.
Thats the one I selected. Oddly now, looking at the add programs list, neither restricted, gnash or Swfdec is selected. I dont know what I am using!
One nice thing is I dont get the youtube ads!
[edit] seems I am using swfdec, but only the portion that integrates into firefox. Thats why it doesnt show in the install list. its just using the libraries.
[editx2] I swapped to the gnash version from gnu.org. swfdec had a terrible offset between spoken words and video. Of course, thats true of youtube in general..
Gnash has the poor decryption in the first second or so as well, but the rest of it is fine. Again, it doesnt have the annoying ads.

I'll try it when I reinstall. I also would like to use as much open source software as is feasible.
What about all the other proprietary plugins? Are there good alternatives yet? (Even Java doesn't seem to work unless I grab the restricted extras) And I'm sure I'll be stuck using a proprietary wireless driver until I get a Linux-friendly laptop someday.

I had to download a mpeg4 codec.
I'll try java when I get the mood to open processing. I'll update my post. I'm less concerned about java as it is so widely supported. I'm not the purist that you find at debian. I just want everything cross platform. Thats the freedom that interests me.
