This happened when clicking on a link here - one that was safe. I saw this problem on another site that was similar in operation. When it opened, instead of opening in one window it kept opening it again and again in new windows until I restarted.

Sounds like it is likely a problem with your computer set-up. What operating system and web browser do you use? What anti-malware software do you run?

I have Windows XP, use IE6 and have Norton Internet Security and Spyware Doctor. Please don't tell me to change my browser - I tried Firefox and it was way too complicated - same with IE7. Couldn't figure it out. I couldn't even get my e mail. I'm about as non-computer savvy as a person can be.

Running IE6 is a death wish for your computer because of its numerous unpatched security holes. Norton similarly is not the ideal thing to run. Firefox to me at least seems less complicated than IE, but then I have very little experience with IE. There are other browser options, such as Opera (which is very nice) and Google Chrome, and you can't get much more straightforward than Google Chrome. I'd recommend a better set of anti-malware programs. I personally like Panda Cloud Antivirus (which has got to be the dead easiest antivirus in the world) and Spybot S&D. A lot of people like AVG Free and Avast for antivirus.

IE 6 is the only one so far I can figure out. I don't want to do something as extremely drastic as changing my browser anyway. It would screw up the thing at the address bar where you click to see the sites you've been to and the envelope thing to check your e mail.

I believe there are ways of importing your browser history from IE (actually, I'm pretty sure FF does this automatically). Anyways, I'm not a Windows guru so I'll leave this for someone more experienced.

This has happened to me a few times; infinite windows opening, and only when using Windows, never on Firefox. What I do is switch everything off, and start again.

It seems to happen when waiting for a link which is taking a long time, especially picking up WP notifications through my yahoo mail.

What was the link? You could have opened a window where it runs a code to open the same window, and so on it goes until everything is paged, then your paging file gets filed, once that's filed, everything becomes slower as it tries to distribute time between everything. The best thing to have done would be
hold [CTRL]+[ALT] then press [DEL] You should see iexplore.exe, right click on that, and select End process tree. (Ending process tree ends everything the program is running. But I do it again to more. I had a similar problem when I tried a crack, it just opened it self over and over, so I used the Task Manager. I got suspicious when nothing was happening and I was out of page file, which was weird as I have 6GB RAM, shouldn't get filled that quickly and the page file is set at the minimum 16MB (until I can be bothered to increase it)

I would like to know what the site was. Not all sites are safe. Firefox was a better conversion for me as it was similar in appearance to IE6. I don't see what the issue wit h it is really. Firefox has had tabbed windows for as long as I can remember, IE7 has only just started it. FF had tabs since version 1.x (I think as that was when I used it, or pre 1.x) FF is now on version 3.0.10. I have the version 2.0 look as I prefer it. IE7 has tabbed browsing in a way that defeats the object, it opens new tabs in the immediate right. I find this hard to keep track of. FF has the ability since version 2.x to restore a session, which is a lifesaver should it crash and it restores you exactly as you were before, including some downloads which I thought was a bonus. IE7 has the option as well, but you have to set it up, it's appearance is so limited, I find it harder to use. With FF you can use a spell check addon which is pretty useful.

I use FF and IE6, I hate IE7 and use IE6 as a backup only (and for router access) IE7 seems to have removed the buttons that I use, it's fortunate that I know the keyboard commands for them.

FF is far more advanced than IE anyway. Flashblock is probably the best addon I have found as well as adblock

It was a link to the t-shirt hell website, the other site it happened on was to another part of that site.

It's always better to have at least 2 internet browsers

I typically have upwards of half a dozen installed at any one time. Right now I have about eight, or nine if you want to count Songbird's built-in browser (which you shouldn't).

I read the title to this thread and thought that somehow you'd blown up a copy of M$ Windows. Awww... disappointed again.

But, anyway. I'd guess that T-Shirt site is a bit fishy, whether it be the site itself or one of the adds. The fact that you're having trouble only on that site is the clue. I'd try testing out a few new browsers. Yes, the ad on the site is probably the problem, but people out there still make attacks for older software and hardware. Upgrading to something a bit more secure should solve your problem.

Other than the missing email link, firefox looks quite a bit similar. It's something to consider, switching over, as popularity equals hackability. No one wants to hack the six guys in BFE with more tech smarts than they have, they want to hack the 100 million grandma's, grandpa's, and stay at home mums who just found the power button with their kids help. Those people all use windows, and as such, all use IE.
