Daria had so much potential it did not live up to. The premise was awesome but then the writers just took the show in boring depressing directions.
Like there was that episode where Daria was wearing contact lenses. They hurt her eyes so she just started walking around blind with no glasses or contacts. The theme: everyone is vain! I wish there was a throw-up emoticon.
Then there was the plotline about her and her best friend fighting over that douchey guy.
Then near the end of the show's run there was that episode where she remembers being a little kid and hiding in a giant cardboard box because her parents were fighting. Then she remembers that they were fighting because of her, because she did not get along with the other kids at school, she didn't get along just because she "just didn't like them". Wow, that really disappointed me, kind of a depressing subject, but deep, yet they completely glossed over analyzing the situation.
The main writer for the show was probably some depressing aspie girl making an unself-aware show about herself. They should've made Daria more badass and make her do wild crazy fun things.

and what do you expect for Daria to do? be promiscuous, get knocked up, do drugs, make-out with girls like those other current shows on TV nowadays? that would just butcher the idea of what Daria's about!
That's not what I had in mind. I think she could've been a mad scientist with a robot friend who always is coming up with improbably hi-tech inventions. Or they should've showed her getting bullied more and then she'd get back at her enemies with intricate Machiavellian plots. It was a cartoon, there has to be some outlandish element to it.
I was way too old to watch it...but, I did... She was a smart, sarcastic, and ultimately good teenage girl. Now if her mother had been more like her, I might have been about right for that...

I never really had a chance to actually watch Daria since it aired in the late 90s and I was little during that time. I did see a couple episodes on MTV a few years ago, but MTV has since stopped showing it.
They are selling the Daria DVD Box Set at retailers now. I brought my copy at Target a long time ago. You get the entire series and the two Daria movies in the box set.

I was a fan of the show and re-watched a few episodes this year. I am particularly a fan of the episode involving the box which was disparaged above. When I was an adolescent, I was often (justly) called or compared to Daria.

Yeah, Daria was great, but just think how much better it could have been if only she’d gotten knocked-up by a drug addicted robot while fighting crime!
