I watched it back when it was on and very much identified with her. I think it had exactly the right tone.

Just because a show is animated doesn't mean it has to be unrealistic.

i love that series so much because i can relate to Daria & Jane. rumor has it that it will be out on DVD next year! can't wait!

who else watched Daria? those were good times, huh?
Just joined this forum and somehow knew that if I did a search for Daria, I'd find something here. :-D

When I was in high school, a couple of the guys started calling me Daria. I had no clue what they meant, we didn't have cable.
When I was in college, I was in a store looking for movies and ran across one of the Daria movies and remembered what they'd said... uh, the girl on the front had unstyled, long brown hair, prominent glasses and unfeminine black boots ~looking in mirror thusly~ So, I bought the film.

Immediately thereafter, I adopted this avatar <- for my online interactions (although, these days, as a professional, I tend to use a real headshot, the avatar is how most of my current friends got to know me). It became pretty clear to me why the guys had seen Daria in me. My deadpan voice, pithy commentary and lack of any social skills... not to mention the basic physical resemblance (yes, 15 years later, my primary footwear is still the black engineer's boot). Add in the outgoing and fashion-conscious blonde sister and I was there!

My husband bought me the Daria box set when it came out, since he knew I'd been wanting to see the rest of the series. ~laughs~ He didn't see why I was so entranced with watching it... but, it was just eerily similar to so many of my own situations back in school.

That said, I always thought I'd hated school, but, turns out that I love life at the University level in ways that I never did when attending dayschool with people my own age.

I used to watch that show with my sister when I was in college and she was in high school. We liked her and Jane because we thought they were more "real" than the superficial kids they were surrounded by, like the cheerleaders and Daria's sister and the Fashion Club. If the show were made today, she and Jane would probably be Aspies, especially since they didn't fit into any kind of clique.

Just because someone doesn't fit into a clique doesn't mean they have Asperger's.

Never got to see it much (don't have cable), but I always laughed at that show.

Daria was the only "normal" person of the whole cast. Everyone else typified the cliquish society we live in.

Heh... I was always particularly amused when Helen would have to tell Jake when Daria was making a joke because he never seemed to notice (that's the story of my life right there).

Jake was awesome because he was completely oblivious.

If anyone likes Daria, they should read Ghost World. The two main characters in Ghost World are a lot like Daria and Jane, except slightly older.

i loved daria. she was a lot like me in some ways. so very aspie-ish. loved her dark sarcasm. her bitterness was a lot more endearing than everyone elses creepy vapidity and preppiness. i liked the box episode. it was like my childhood/teen years except i hid in the closet. daria is out in dvd in australia and i got so excited i almost squeeled in the dvd shop but then i realised it was region 1 and i was bummed. i stood there for an abnormal amount of time and just held it.

Uh, I can't say I 'liked' the box episode exactly... but, I certainly watched it a few times (and, ditto on the closet).

Daria seems quite aspie-ish to me; she even has the monotone associated with aspies. She's also totally awesome. so is Jane.

The show is ocasionally profound in its wickedly funny skewering of modern society.
