What do you hate about modern films?

While this may look like my other topic about kid's tv today being absolutely dreadful, it's far from it. What this topic is about is to rant about the movies of today and the cliches that honk you off. I don't know if this topic has already been done, and if so, apologies.

For example, the cliche that pisses me off the most is the cliche of the bratty 10-12 year old kid that uses language that would make Parker/Stone blush. Smarter than his/her dips*** parents and even his/her older sibling. This cliche has been so overused, it's not funny.


Another problem with films today. One word: Remakes. Just let the maggots eat the dead horse and stop beating it already!

Those are just a couple of the things about films these days that make me want to scream, what's yours?

The epic scale of everything, there is no real focus in storylines anymore.

I agree with all of the above! And, the way plots are not plots anymore, but just glorified excuses for gratuitous nudity and violence, with camera shots that force you to check out women's body parts, over and over again... Also, the action in some movies is so swift that I become confused. One thing in particular is being overused; sudden car crashes that kill instantly; like in "Disturbia," "Snowcake," and "Adaptation." Enough already!

All the stupid GOD DAMN MERCHANDISE!! !! !! The first movie is just starting out so not knowing whether it'll be popular not much merchandise IF ANY AT ALL! THEN WHAM #2 AND 1,000,000's OF IMO STUPID MERCHANDISE!! !! ! Disney even stated in an article I found that they didn't want to go ahead with a sequel to The Proposal and rather spend money on movies they can merchandise and put into 3-D (Pirates,Pixar stuff,action films etc.! !) SHEESH!! !! !! !! Also Stuff THAT COULD HAVE seen IMO Awesome merchandise DIDN'T GET BARELY ANY!! !! !! ! For UP! for example IMO a statue of the house with the balloons on it for $50-$100 (ceramic/porcelain well made) I'd BUY IT!! !! !! Also the sequel has to be OMG POW WHAM BAM!! ! The first is cool and unique in its own way but the sequel has to go OMG OVER THE TOP!! !! !!

While I'm psyched for Iron Man 2 on Friday I hear there are tons of different plot points SHEESH! What happen to Tony Stark fighting some bad guy? Instead we have Black Widow,Iron Man/Stark,(Something Hammer forgot the name),War Machine, Robot Drones,Whiplash etc. (The one idea I DO LOVE unlike OTHER superhero films everyone KNOWS Tony IS Iron Man so seeing how that plays out in the sequel IMO will be interesting. Also Making a sequel JUST for more money I am a SUPER Toy Story fan but even I have my doubts for #3 (sure Pixars movies are FABULOUS! but the dreaded #3 (see past #3 movies sequel AWESOME better than original #3 IS s**t!! !!) (Also worried about Batman 3 (DON'T CARE HOW GOOD NOLAN IS!! !! !)

Also on your topic of remakes WHY IN THE HELL DO MIKE MYERS/KRUEGER ETC. NEED DAMN PSYCHOLOGICAL TRAUMA THEY ARE GOD DAMN KILLING MACHINES!! !! !! !! !! !! OMG Myers was beat/etc. LIKE I CARE HE'S A BRUTAL KILLING MACHINE! Don't GIVE THESE Killers psychological backgrounds I DON'T CARE DAMN IT!! !! !! !! !! !! !

Where to begin??

(1) No new ideas. This carries on from your "remakes" point, but it includes remaking things that aren't films too. There's a spate of superhero films lately - they've even remade Batman, which shows they've run out of heroes already (Daredevil and Ghostrider are getting a little too far away from mainstream already - I don't mean they're bad choices for heroes, but bad choices for Hollywood as they aren't as well known).

(2) Romance. It seems every Hollywood film has to have a romantic frisson between the leading man and the leading lady, which is fine in some cases... but sometimes it seems silly. The worst example of this for me is Lord of the Rings, in which whole, tedious scenes are added - not in the books at all - between Arwen and Aragorn. An autistic work colleague is looking forward to Spiderman 4 and even he hopes it doesn't feature Mary Jane in peril AGAIN.

(3) Mediocre plotting. I saw Avatar recently; it was entertaining and the visual effects were amazing, but the plot was incredibly flimsy and the characters were more caricatures. No shades of grey in this film; you can tell the goodies from the baddies at a glance, and see the plot coming for miles on a clear day. Writing has become much more simplistic, as if Hollywood feel their audiences aren't smart enough to follow complicated plots and need lots of explosions and gunfire to keep their attention focused. I'd hope audiences are better than that.

I'm also fed up with the same actors appearing in everything. There's a ton of talent out there that could use more exposure, but big names mean guaranteed big takings even if the film stinks. Sigh...

Oh, and more:

(4) Shaky camerawork. I found the Bourne films almost unwatchable at times due to the horrifically shaky imaging during fight sequences that made it impossible to see what was actually going on. Directors, going for "realism" isn't clever. The whole drive of cinema has been to make cameras LESS shaky!

(5) Paranormal Activity warrants a bullet point all of its own, except I have to include the Blair Witch Project (which is, basically, the same film in a different setting). These movies are hyped to ludicrous extremes because, when you actually study them more closely, you see that the story takes up all of about five minutes. They're an hour and a half of padding. They're also dirt cheap to make, require very little effort to write and don't even need a soundtrack.

I hated this so much, and the annoying Arwen/Eowyn fighting over Aragorn because every movie needs romance for some reason. I hate when they take the plot of a perfectly good book and decide to add things that aren't at all canon, while still keeping the basic plot i.e. Prizoner of Azkaban and LotR. I also hate how movies have basically become a formula - I can predict exactly what will happen in every horror movie, romantic comedy, etc. because it's the same basic plot with different monsters/scenes/actors. Horror movies are terrible - just an excuse to show people being tortured and murdered.

I don't like the language and the sexual content of today's movies. There's also not much of a plot, either. I also don't care for the big, strong male/weak little female stereotypes, either. I also don't like how all the bad guys have accents, and all the good guys sound flawlessly American.

Not much. I prefer modern films to older ones.

There's nothing in general I dislike about modern movies. Something could be horrible in one movie and work brilliantly in another. There's just too much to take into consideration.

pointless plots, unimaginative, humor now consists of slapstick and harshness, stupidity etc...

there are a lot of good modern movies though but the majority of them are indie. the last good modern movie i saw in theatres was probably Where the Wild Things Are.

too many movies are too damned LOUD!! ! [explosions that sound like nukes, gunshots that sound like cannons, et al]
muffled dialogue, due to both the noisy sound effects and to modern actors mumbling their lines.
exaggerated judder as a visual effect
period pieces set in the 1950s back to the turn of the century, in which are shown men with long hair. military movies with long-haired american male soldiers/sailors.
"jumping the shark," e.g., characters getting gut-shot then in the next scene are kicking ass.
period movies which depict characters behaving in modern fashion, anachronistically.

Agreed. It seems as though one movie
every week or so is a romantic comedy or a romantic drama.

ENOUGH WITH THE ROMANTIC COMEDIES, HOLLYWOOD!

If the movie has a good storyline, I will see it.

Lack of nuance.
Absence of oratory.
Reliance on cuts and effects instead of acting.
"Inherit the Wind" was one of the last great films, in my opinion.
