Sooo... am I the only one here who finds conventional heroes and heroines a bit boring, and instead focuses on that side character who actually has to work to be liked and appreciated as much as they should be, or that rare main character that everyone else seems to hate because they're not what a "hero" is supposed to be like?

I find myself interested in a character who, without fail, is almost always despised or ignored by the fandom and skipped over in promotions and merchandising, if not shortchanged by canon itself. Maybe it's a "support the underdog" kind of thing, or maybe I just have much different taste in people than the majority - both are very likely possibilities.

For those of you who know what I'm talking about, who are some of your favorite characters of this sort? What are traits in characters that most seem to hate that you actually find cool, interesting or endearing?

I always like the unlikeable. Like Quasimodo as an example.

Well, I remember from the Harry Potter books that Hermione was always my favorite. I know she's one of the main characters but I actually imagined the whole book and movie series to be redone in Hermione's perspective. I even came up with the score for the new movie LOL It would be the same score from "A Beautiful Mind".

As one who grew up in an era of "formula" sitcoms, definitely yes! There was always a a particularly quirky character (like Jim in "Taxi" or Dietrich in "Barney Miller") thrown in to add comic effect. That person was always the main character to me. They always lived happily in their own little world and were quite content with their interpretation of events. Vastly more interesting than the mainstream characters.

i think it'd be interesting to see the series from the perspective of Luna Lovegood, or maybe a short story dealing with the details of her day. get a peek into her delightfully askew view of the world.

I usually try to like the main characters, because if I dislike them, the story can get really annoying since it's about them.

Sometimes I dislike the same characters as other fans, and sometimes I liked them. Once my favotire character might have been the most disliked one from the series, that was pretty boring.

I liked Scott Howard in Teen Wolf. I liked how he was still nice to people even as a werewolf (he was a bit cocky too), and how he's rather nonviolent as a werewolf (During times when Scott would get mad, he doesn't seem to act on his true rage). It was a refreshing look at my favorite horror creature for once because he has personality. Like his uncle Harold said, "Werewolves are people just like everybody else".

There's just something about defying stereotypes that really catch my attention.

In Hellsing, I feel like I'm one of the few people who likes Walter best when he's an elderly butler. It seems like the majority of Hellsing fans only like him after he's been turned into a vampire by Millennium or when he's a teenager fighting in Poland due to his more youthful appearance. But personally, I like him the most when he's elderly, because that's when he seems to be at his most serene, wise and gentle (except during the battle with the Valentine Brothers, that is). Kind of like the grandpa I wish I had.

In Trinity Blood, one of my top favorite characters is one that is almost always overlooked: William Walter Wordsworth, The Professor. I really like him because he's so jovial and intelligent; definitely someone I'd hang out with in real life.

In Gurren Lagann, I am really attached to Nia, even more so than the other main characters. I'm not sure how popular she is here in the West, but she must have some kind of fan-following in Japan to have so much merchandise based off of her (from figurines to pillowcases and even an artbook!).

I like Derek, Markus, Angie and Valerie from Trauma Center as well. They're overlooked characters, because even though the franchise is popular for its gaming aspects, the characters themselves don't seem to get a lot of fan-love.
