Hi from Finland
Um, hi. My name is Miisa and I live in Finland.
Thanks to a brush with psychologists a few years ago I have a diagnosis of Bipolar II (which is rubbish - I was just temporarily more depressed than usual) and a firm resolution to never have anything to do with that profession again, so I will not be seeking an official diagnosis for Asperger's. But after taking an online test as a lark a few years ago - and getting over the initial shock of that that test showed strong aspie traits, as did the next one, and the next... - I am calming down and getting to be ok with the likelihood. I recently also discovered the term alexithymia, another condition that often overlaps with Asperger's, which describes me very well. Possibly also dysphoria (see bipolar diagnosis above).
I am pushing 40, so when I was a kid one did not take children to the doctor for a keen interest in a particular subject or for boring their peer's ears off, but my mother always knew I was different. Her description was that I had to be some sort of extra-terrestrial alien changeling or something, so the name of this site feels strangely like home.
My nick is from the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where one character was describes as being "newly human and strangely literal".
Oh, and I tried joining the local Finnish aspie board, but it seems they thought I was a bot. Not really a confidence-booster there.
Hi Miisa! Welcome to Wrong Planet! Check out the different forums and articles here. They are interesting and helpful. You are among friends here at WP. This site serves Autism/Asperger's people and their families and friends, from many different countries, so we are used to people from all over. I post from America, but have responded to posts from people from a number of different countries. Most of the posters who are foreign to me are from the United Kingdom, but I have responded to posts from people from Norway, Germany, China, and several other countries.
I hope you like this site. I do! ![]()

Best to stay away from psychologists, I agree. Nothing but confusion can result.
Still, it's hard to get by without some sort of attempt to resolve the yawning gaps between what's said and what's done: what are the alternatives?
There's not a lot that's earthshaking around here, but the irretrievably different can sometimes find some sort of validation. Welcome to the crowd.

Welcome to WP!
I was dx'd a few years ago and I'm 47. It wasn't that big a deal to me, but it certainly helped explain things to me, about how I work and think and react, etc.
I don't know about Finland, but I wouldn't think that a dr could do anything bad to you about the AS. After all, they are working for you. You hire them to either find or fix a problem. If you want to know for certain if you have it, I'd really suggest going to a professional.
Either way, good luck and welcome.

Thank you so much for the welcomes!
Yeah, about the diagnosis thing, it has become a sort of thing for me to avoid doctors now, especially as I can't afford a private one, so it would either be through my employer (again) or the municipal ones (horrific experience previously) and have thus convinced myself that there are really no benefits to a formal diagnosis, at least in adulthood. As is, since taking those tests and then reading up on it, I am less hard on myself about my reluctance to socialize and already give myself some slack.
Aspie post & mistaken for bot == doing it right ??
Luckily it was nothing as exciting as people calling my posts those of a bot (though I don't doubt my ability to fail even fail a Turing test - after all I failed an IQ test once
It's been a while, but that was Anya wasn't it?
Indeed it was, Anya the leporiphobic and gleefully capitalist ex-demon.
