The rules are quite clear...

Quote:
2. Personal attacks.
This includes insinuation, ridicule and personal insults, regardless of whether direct or indirect. Attacking an opinion, belief or philosophy is acceptable, but attacking the person making the comments is not.

In recent days, all over the board, I have noticed a lot of people violating this rule. Some are older members. Some are new, but it is becoming more prevalent.

Why?

Honestly... part of the reason I came here was to "be among my own kind," as one of my NT friends put it. I was also impressed by the presence of that rule. Before I posted, I observed and saw that it was enforced as well. So, I felt comfortable posting.

It's not that hard to treat each other with respect. Why can't we... and why aren't we?

Further... do we call each other on it? Do we let it go? Do we respond in kind? Or do we just walk away, realizing that Aspies and NTs have much more in common with each other than we want to admit? I mean that honestly, too...

Many of us want to be considered normal and accepted in spite of our behavior... flagrant disrespect for someone just because you have a different opinion from them or a piece of knowledge they do not... Well... that's something I see most in NTs the world over...

Thoughts?

Maybe it's just because I'm new, but I haven't seen any of what you're talking about. Everyone's been quite polite and accepting. Then again, maybe that's just me.

This type of behavior is typical for the Internet. It is only controlled in forums with moderation.

This.

Anyone can be rude. Aspies aren't the exception. The majority of people are polite and helpful here.

I'd mostly agree, although I have seen an increase in the exceptions who are not. There are many possible reasons why, but as to how those of us who don't want to live in a constant flame war should respond, the best rule is usually the most basic one. Don't feed the trolls. Otherwise, the conversation quickly devloves:

(Disclaimer: the following examples in italics are directed at no one. They are illustrations, fabricated conversations to make a point, nothing more.)

"You're just a stupid jerk!"

"No, you're a stupid jerk!"

"You're a big, fat, ugly stupid jerk!"

"No, you're a big, fat, ugly stupid jerk!"

And so on, until one party gives up.

As opposed to:

"You're a stupid jerk!"

(Silence, for which every other reader of that thread is grateful, because then the fire dies down quickly)

When you ignore the trolls, they tend to give up and go somewhere else.

And, if someone is going to make that kind of attack, you really can't respond constructively. Such a remark isn't worth the effort of responding. (I do understand the urge. I've given in to it, sometimes. That doesn't mean it was a good idea, just that I let my feelings overcome my better judgment.)

I also think there are lots of frustrated and angry people out there so, yes, some of that is directed to members here. It's not fair but it happens.

The OP seems to think this is supposed to be the "jolly-candyland" of the internet or something. lol, Seriously though Wrong Planet is very tame compared to many other internet forums. People are sometimes rude, but there's very rarely any so-called "internet tough guys" on here for one thing.

The OP also wants to run for president in 2016.

I think there should be a Seal-President in 2016. Just picture a Seal wearing a suit and tie. He'd also keep "tooting" the entire time he's giving speeches like the State of the Union address.

Thank you for putting words in my mouth. Please provide a citation... As obama said, let's see the transcript...

Ironically enough... It had nothing to do with my expectations, but hopes. I had hoped that people here, of all places, would be able to follow the rules. Though, I do thank you for throwing my point into stark relief.

FNORD: It's already been announced.

I posit, however, that most of the hatred and vitriol that is spit here is not actually from aspies, but the misdiagnosed and self proclaimed...

but I could be wrong.

I do, however, find it interesting that the topic elicited responses that seem, on the surface to be mocking. Especially when it was observatory in nature, not a complaint.

Double dittos same experience. Have not found a more polite and supportive place on the net. Now in spirited discussions on weighty matters believe some leeway should be given to creative speech which might not quite conform to currently accepted standards of the dreaded disease of political correctness.

Venger: You do realize that your behavior reflects only on you. Especially when asked for citations and you respond with what you perceive to be an insult.

I don't expect pleasantness... I do expect respect... for others and the rules, but one can be extremely unpleasant to another and still show respect...

Now, please contribute, or stop trolling.
