Why are you here? I needed to find a place with people who understand me.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): I was diagnoised with treatment-resistant depression at age 13. I was 26 when I was officially diagnoised with Asperger's, and I wish I'd know A LOT sooner.

Favorite music: Rock opera and musicals! Especially German ones! Yes, I'm weird!

Books: Almost anything by J.R.R. Tolkien (I'm a Tolkien geek), Les Miserables, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Killer Angels, Gods and Generals, most historical nonfiction, lots of others I am forgetting.

TV shows/Movies: The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Star Wars (except for Episode I), Office Space, The Big Lebowski, The Life Aquatic, The History Channel, shows about the paranormal.

Instrument: I played the trumpet in high school. I hated it. If I had to do it over again, I would have tried the oboe. The oboe is beautiful.

Family: My dad is a bipolar alcoholic and an undiagnoised Aspie. My sister is a bipolar undiagnoised Aspie with bulimia. My mother and her side of the family are sane (thank God). My dad's side of the family is full of mental illness, all umdiagnoised.

Clothing: I am a little overweight so I am trying not to buy clothes while I lose weight but I'm a very casual dresser. T-shirts are my favorite. When I want to dress up a bit, I like Boho-type things.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): Sort of just now, because when I grew up, there was nothing to diagnose in this direction. I was just shy and clumsy..

Favorite subjects: Whatever is on my mind at the moment, though that can be very jumpy.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): self-diagnosis - somewhere on the spectrum, growing realization began in 2002 while i was in my fourth year of intensive services and treatment for a dependent who has autism and various other challenges that are still evolving. blown away, inside, that some of the most well known and respected researchers and clinicians could not see it in me. my daughter is now in her teens and we recently found a chromosome 22 abnormality. i will get my genetic testing soon. still very cautious and very nervous because i have spent years and years and years developing coping, calming, morphing and masking techniques. those in my family who are so obviously also on the spectrum, have not had the pleasure of a child like mine who absolutely does not have "just a smidge" of both autism and concurrent psychiatric challenges. my child also has cognitive delays, severe dsylexia and body awareness disconnects. while others wanted to blame it on my ex-husband, environmental factors, or magic, i knew-knew, intuitively, that she was not the only alien in the room. in my first career i managed millions as a full service retail investment adviser and stock broker -- for ten years. they had no idea.

Favorite subjects: basically, anything except calculus, biology, physics and engineering.

Year/Grade: completing PhD dissertation, same field as MA: Communications, New Media Theory and Philosophy.

Favorite music: i am very very affected by music. most anything except: what is popular currently, trance, noise, death metal and shrieking.

Books: "A Wrinkle In Time" changed my life at age eight. too many to list. i am a reader. it is what i do.

TV shows/Movies: this is hard! i have not been a big tv or cable watcher or "followed a show" since about 1998. i have been studying media theory and such since 2007. i have A LOT of favorite movies, for different reasons. Valley Girl, Jerimiah Johnson, any Bill Hicks live, Cinema Paridiso, classic Speed Racer, A Quiet Man, almost any Kurosawa, The Shining, Cast Away, Calamity Jane and a s**t load of obscure art house and surrealist and independent. Aronofsky. i have forced both Rushmore and Lars and the Real Girl on more than one person.

Instrument: none. i used to play the violin, quite poorly.

Do you like sports? i keep trying. i enjoy watching the olympics when it comes around, but it is hard to read and smoke and talk while playing sports. that said, i forced myself to semi-learn darting.
