When in public school I just would not do them and they gave up trying to force me. My grades were blah.

I'm not sure, it's really your decision as a parent. He'll probably be teased either way (from my own childhood experiences), so don't base that on you decision.

If its math, maybe you could try relating it to his interest ie: "if there were five dinosaurs, then the ice age wiped out two of them, how many dinosaurs would be left?" (or something a little less dramatic). Maybe try using dinosaur figurines to practice adding and subtracting with. and I'm not clear on 1st grade curriculum, but maybe try spelling dinosaur names to gain interest in the alphabet?
