I actually don't mind polo shirts (as long as they're properly fitted (I actually like a vintage, or classic fit myself). In fact, that and a pair of lightweight dress slacks is as formal as I get. I can't stand ties, button-down shirts, or even long sleeves, (even rolling the sleeves up bothers me,)

I dunno if this would work for you, but I have in the past sewn the front of a button down shirt shut. Maybe you could do this and just pop off the buttons?

I hate western collars too. I just seam rip those babies off. It looks kinda oriental style collar after i take that off, but it still looks professional.
