Anyone in the personal service industry?

I'm planning to be a personal chef and I've already prepared myself for the "chef" part, now I'm concerned with the "personal" part. It's an industry that relies heavily on networking and referrals. Though most personal chefs advertise, they say they get most of their business from word-of-mouth advertising. Does anyone have any experience with trying to market this type of business?
