Hi, I'm 18 years old I've been suffering from constant grunting I've been doing this for 6yearsish. I'm on Concerta for my ADHD. I don't know that I'm doing it sometimes but it just feels like there's something always in my throat and I grunt to clear it but there's nothing there? it's embarrassing for me when I go to the cinema or when the room is silent
and now it's starting to get on my parents nerves when they're trying to watch something. Does anyone know why I grunt constantly? it's repetitive. Is it a tic or?

It could be a tic. My son has motor tics and he says that he has a strange sensation the precipitates his need to tic, then when he tics, it makes the sensation go away. He can avoid doing it for a period of time, but avoiding it makes a feeling of tension build up that is very uncomfortable for him. Does this sound familiar to you?

Have you asked your doctor about it?

I'd just like to mention since he's on Concerta, it's possible it could be a side effect of that medication. ADHD meds can sometimes trigger tics, especially in a kid with a genetic predisposition to Tourette's. (The gene for Tourette's can also cause ADHD and obsessions, and has incomplete penetrance, meaning not everyone with the gene has the symptoms from it.)

My son grunts I try to mimic it to show behavioral specialists she was familiar with the sound. Son is 2.5 and autism it's a lil worse in stores along with the sucking thru teeth sound. Still learning on his quirks.

But on another person my Mom does the clear throat/grunt thing. I don't say anything don't want to embarrass her and I wonder if she even knows she is. She does have anxiety take some meds but I found she does it worse when taking Valium I hate when she takes those pills.

Agree to much Internet, over research can be harmful. There comes a time when you do have to just observe and accept what's going on.

Hey.My 10 year old was diagnosed yesterday with ASD/aspergers and tourettes. He has something similar. Its his breathing.Sounds like he is gasping for air and has a little grunt that accompanies it sometimes. Also the squeek. That one drives me nuts!
