We've had a great experience with Dr Vandana at Childrens Memorial Hospital in Chicago (Childrens Psychiatry department, she's an MD but also does therapy and evaluations)

We are in the last stages of evaluation and diagnosis of our 4 year old and I've found this Dr to be absolutely amazing, she picks up on the subtle things that i've mentioned but have perhaps not been as obvious during the appointments, she treated me as a peer and spoke to me rather than down to me, really helped me understand the issues and the whys and whats, answered my questions wonderfully. Praised my parenting (always nice especially after being told that the issues were BECAUSE of my parenting by other Dr's) and has just been overall a wonderful Dr to work with, natural, relaxed, honest, and able to listen to and understand what i'm telling her. I have a lot of trouble with Dr's appointments and getting across what i want to say but have had no trouble with this Dr at all.

Can't say enough good, highly recommend her.

Any recommendations in Southern New Jersey?

The Dr. that diagnosed my son's Asperger's retired soon after that. At that time, I did not know how fortunate I was to be given the name of that Dr. by a teacher at the school my son was attending. It's hard for me to find a "good" doctor, especially since I don't even know what kind of a Dr. I'm looking for!

I'm in Uk, diagnosis can depend on age of child and area:

I'm in the North West and most of the districts have a Child Development Team/Unit for under 5's who are a multi-disciplinary team of SALT's, Consultant Pediatricians, OT's, Physio's and more
Over 5's go through CAMHS (Children and Adolescent Mental Health Service) and they have the same kind of team but include primary practioners and Psychiatrists.

Referreal is needed through GP or schools can refer to Educatinal Psychology.

There is also a centre in North West with a leading professional

Dr Catherine Aldred (I don't have the link but you can google her)

I'm afraid I only know about the North West in UK as other areas may work differently

In the US, I recommend looking for a psychiatrist who is experienced with autism. In my experience, they are usually child/adolescent psychiatrists.

For the RARE & FEW Alaskan Aspies - Fairbanks, AK (& North Star Borough):

Recommended clinician: http://www.hopecounselingcenter.org/

Terry Kelly
MA, LPC, BCETS, EMDR Certified

Although not an "expert" in Autism, I highly recommend (5 stars) since he's very amendable to those with Autism (Aka: "Aspie friendly")! In Alaska, specificially Fairbanks, there really are no neuro/psych professionals so best to choose one with plenty of experience, smart, and thoughtful - hence my suggestion. Definitely wanting to learn - that's a plus!
NOTE: Although HCC is technically "Christian based" please know this is optional - in no way is this imposed. Also, they are flexible about payment with their affiliations. Very courteous and professional.

For Anchorage, AK: Lab Pet's personal recommendation (check in phone directory for Anchorage locals - the two below are in the same suite). 5 Stars to both:

Dr. Peter Strisik; PhD in psychology. Very considerate to Autists although, again, no expertise in Autistic Spectrum Disorders. He's very willing to learn and "Aspie friendly" too.

Dr. Robert Wald; MD (Psychiatrist/Neurologist). Also "Aspie friendly," very professional and experienced (he's really old!) - very smart and gentle. This one I trust with prescribing!
NOTE: Unsure when, but Dr. Wald may be nearing retirement.

Although I would usually never "un-recommend" I will only because this one HURT - and really dismal showing in ASD: This clinic is a "do-not-do!" NOTE: This clinic is just a medical clinic - not a neuro/psych agency. However, their public nurse (unfortunately) does some advocacy and "mental health nursing" (but without training - she's actually a public health nurse only). Beware - this one is harbors bias and has personally said disparaging comments about Aspies! Real concern here about their approach.
[I'll refrain here from giving her name, for ethical / privacy reasons]:

Fairbanks, AK: Barnette Street Public Health Clinic

My therapist is actually a pediatrician but she has done extensive research in autism and Asperger syndrome. If you want me to give her contact info, I would prefer it be done by PM.

For Adults in the UK.......I would HIGHLY recommend the Autism Research Centre in Cambridge. If you can get there and can finance the assessement it will be indisputable. The National Health Service sometimes requires that an NHS diagnosis be made before 'support' (wherever they are hiding that) can be given. However these experts are well known and respected. Patients in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are eligible for an NHS referral. All other areas sadly have to be privately funded. I can totally recommend this unit.
