Don't like the way video gaming is heading
I think my favorite time period for gaming will be mid-PS2 to late PS3 era. Games befoe had too little substance and games today are just overloading with features added and open world gaming messes with my head too much.

I HATE how you have to pay REAL money for VIRTUAL stuff in order to get ahead in a game nowadays. I mean, you're almost literally throwing your money away. Instead of creating games with actual selling capacity, gaming companies are resorting to schemes where actual enjoyment of the game costs much more than the game itself.

I remember that you would simply pay $35-$40 dollars for a very good game and that was enough to settle you for about 40 hours or more.
I refuse to pay the new game consoles. They all have glaring flaws for my personal tastes:
-Controllers require batteries
-I am not a fan of motion control. I like to sit down when playing video games.
-I do not have internet at home. Therefore, cannot connect to internet to play many desirable games
-No interest in any of the games coming out for them.
-All the games have blood, gore, or otherwise mature themes. I don't want that playing a video game.
The only one I might buy is the Nintendo 3DS. Is is cheap, simple and lots of family-friendly games and games that interest me.
Aww Techn0teen, was someone sheltered as a kid?
And yes, that was meant to be condescending.
Mature themes are fine...I do agree on excessive gore though, but the rest is lies.

ebec11, I have long thought the gamecube was where Nintendo was starting to get too kid friendly and focus less on good games than making them appeal to kids.
Only noteworthy games I can remember are Super Smash Bros. melee, Pikmin (1 and 2!), F-Zero (Wipeout stole from them), Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2, Viewtiful Joe, Paper Mario, Sonic/Megaman classics (although I prefer the PS2 versions controlwise, much like Soul Calibur) and Eternal Darkness. Don't like what they did to Starfox.

I do not have a problem with gore and other mature content in videogames. However, I don't care for it when said content is thrown in purely for the sake of having it. Devs seem to think games need that type of content to have any kind of appeal to gamers. There are times when that kind of content makes sense. Violent action games that involve slicing up an enemy use gore to add realism. Then there are games like Corpse Party, where death is a major theme, and the various bodies scattered throughout are a constant reminder of the fate the main characters are trying to avoid. Of course, there are also the bad endings. Even then, I'd say the game keeps that type of content at an absolute minimum for what it was trying to accomplish, and certain things are left to the imagination. Like with anything, I think gore has a time and a place. Not everything needs gore, just like, not everything needs multiplayer. I think modern devs need to give their fanbase more credit. Then again, there are gamers who fit the stereotype they operate on. Another problem I have with this mindset, is that certain content can be used to try to compensate for lack of quality in a game, and that is often the case. If a game is no good, no amount of violence is going to fix that, for the same reason that a game's graphics can't fix a bad game, even if it looks absolutely stunning.
Agreed Tross, hyperviolence games like Bladestorm disgust me though.

You do know that people enjoyed games before they started creating lifelike graphics right?
I mean...the pre-PS2 Final Fantasy games, most PC games before 2003 and even SEGA games have value and substance in them which even the PS2 can't emulate. Saying that older games have no substance is being arrogant to the great games of the past.
Hell, even Elite (never played it), provided hours of fun to those who loved that game...and that game had so little memory, you could probably fit it in today's calculators!

CrazyStarlight, I think some games like Megaman and Sonic the hedgehog aged well, but as a whole they just don't have that highly immersive feeling...it is basically mastering simple tasks where I grew up with games you had options and multiple techniques you could use and done in a way there are multiple ways you can accomplish goals. I like options with linearity.
That being said things are becoming a bit too open world now.

I find Mega Man really hard to play, but it's not to do with how simple it is...it's more to do with being Nintendo Hard (which I will never overcome...I still can't beat the old Mario games).
I see, fair enough, although too many techniques can spoil a game if overused and unbalanced.
Aren't all RPGs linear anyway? I never get how the RPG genre never evolved.

The RPG genre evolved, looked at the skill trees in Dragon Age 2: Origins or the 100+ characters in League of Legends. They are way more complex than any old FInal fantasy or Fire Emblem game.
Old mario games are crazy hard, think the furthest I ever got in one was Super mario bros. 3 on 2-3...forgot to mention those, they are fun but wicked hard as well.

I mean in the linear aspect, RPGs set you onto a strict path in which you can branch out to different areas when the game lets you. In terms of stats/characters and the like, it's evolved but the core aspect hasn't so much.
Isn't Fire Emblem pretty new in the West?
I only got further due to the warp pipes you can use...but yeah, they are not the easiest games.

I think that's mostly because RPG players don't like change much. Nothing wrong with a formula that works...just don't expect me to buy 15 games with it!
Fire Emblem has been here since Gamecube era...and I am curious about radiance. Eternal Poison outright stole from it.
I could never get to the warp pipes, are they hidden?

lol Fair enough. I don't mind change myself, which is why I can only ever play the Final Fantasy games once ever....except from X as that was my first.
I see...don't they have them on the Handhelds as well?
One of them (on World 2), is beyond the map behind a palm tree...you need a hammer item to cut down the tree, and you go to an item House to obtain a flute...which plays a Zelda Melody...not exactly a warp pipe, but it does the same thing.
