I play online correspondence chess on chess.com and when I have to make a move I set up the position on a real board and think about the move. But yes, I also prefer real time OTB chess. But there are few players here , too. Few local tournaments (like 1 a year), and my local chess club is full of kid who shout all the time and I can't concentrate, and they play only 5 or 15 m games. Not really the best.

I do. My favorite strategy is to destroy both queens (my opponent's and my own), and then to use the pawn special rule of promotion to get back my queen. People usually don't know what I am doing until it is too late.

I used to a lot in high school, a lot of wasted time doing that. Sometimes I played online but then I got bored.

Quite a lot yes. Couple hours a day, every day. I am actively trying to get better. Got to 1800 and stagnated for many years. Never really practiced much and grew complacent after that. After my rating fell last year I've devoted a lot of time and effort to pass this 'wall' I've been stuck at.

As a newbie here I am happy to find chess threads! Best chance to keep me from being a lurker.

Congratulations on reaching 1800 strength. Which rating system is that? Takes quite a bit of accumulated knowledge to reach that level.

I don't suppose you're a member on ICC? If you are, or can join, maybe I can help you there. (If you do join, PM me your username and I'll be happy to play and chat!)

Chess has been an addiction of mine for a little over 20 years. I have not been actively competing as much recently due to emphasis on studying to improve (crisis of confidence also).

My official rating is 2100+ but I estimate my current strength somewhere higher than that. Hopefully future results can confirm it. (In the last few years I've had a number of wins and draws against International Masters, and also beat a Grandmaster.)

I love chess and am happy to help people of any level. Whether that is as my student or just friendly conversation. :)

My brother was in the chess club when I was little and my father had some experience, so I often played with them growing up. Prior to today I hadn't played in several years.

I don't find it very enjoyable unless it's offline or I'm playing with a friend, but I have some motivation to sit down and study the game now. Maybe an offline chess group would be good for me.

I think it sounds like a fun idea!

There is also plenty you can do on your own! I could suggest books/websites for improvement if you're interested.

I play semi-regularly. However, I'm not extremely good at it, and I haven't ever studied chess strategies; I mostly enjoy it just like any other board game.

Did anyone notice the mistakes in the description for this section?

"Are you the next Bobby Fisher or are you more of a Gary Kasparov? Do you have what it takes to battle Big Blue and win every time? When you visit Las Vegas do you count cards in order to cheat casinos out of their money? "

Should be Bobby Fischer, Garry Kasparov and Deep Blue. Got all of the chess references wrong. Funny stuff. (:

Do you know any good books for beginners? I've been poking around online, but I'm not sure.

I used to play chess all the time, actually. Now, I'm usually busy drawing or studying.

A nice chess game wouldn't hurt right now, actually. :chin:
