Dunno how many people here build their own PCs, but I was just wondering what everyone else does about noisy case fans.

I know I've broken a few trying to get them to shut up...I've got one right now that's making all sorts of racket :x

I had it unplugged for the longest time, but I got tired of my GPU getting too hot, and decided to blow everything out and plug it back in.

Still making noise :x :x :x

I don't know, I think soon I might need to open it up and see if I can't grease it: http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/51 ... 34842.html

If you have broken blades, it can make the fan run noisily. The best solution is to either sit them on rubber/silicon washers or replace them. It's usually the bearings that wear so much, they rattle where they get smaller.

would be great if something could be done for the xbox360s fans,if wanted to hear the sound of planes taking off continuously, would go and stand in the airport.

Nah, the blades aren't broken, but I was looking around and the AMD airflow guide said a front intake fan isn't necessary and might actually be slightly harmful, so I'm just going to take it out the next time I shut down.

The exhaust fan started rattling like crazy last night, so this morning I tried the grease guide I posted earlier, and now it's totally silent =)

I agree, but its probably because the fans might have been modified in later models to keep the insides cooler. Otherwise you'd get the notorious "Red Ring of Death."

For cooling you need two fans, one to draw cold air in and the other to remove hot air. Removing a fan could cause the Xbox to overheat or accelerate wear on other components, such as hard drive bearings wearing quicker, or bearings in the optical drive bay.

I really cannot deal with nosy fans, they really get to me. I think when I bought my system, I spent about £500 but of that around £100 went solely towards extra money towards products that were quiet. Sometimes I think that £100 could have bought a truely powerful graphics card but I do not regret it. My advice would be to buy a good CPU fan, probably a Zalman, meanwhile the fan for the graphics card should be fine. Then, remove any other fans, case fans for example, so they only exist because CPU fans are quiet bad.

Also/alternatively, download Speed Fan. http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php Completely free, easy to use, and you can probably quieten your existing fan down without putting the CPU anywhere near dangers levels of heat.

I don't own one, but it seems to me that most of the noise comes from the power brick, so maybe you could just hide that part behind your TV or something?

I think I read something about the newer models using different components so they could be more passively cooled, but I'm sure for most people you can't exactly just trade in your old one for a new one.
