American veterans get the gold plated shaft from our society. I've met guys online who did 4 or 5 tours in "The Sandbox" and came back ruined physically and mentally, and they have to pry help out of VA. Then there's the idea that they're all psychos ready to explode and kill lots of people. Since Vietnam America has been one of the worst societies on the planet in the way it treats soldiers. Sometimes I wonder why they bother, and so do they, and often they conclude that America isn't worth fighting for. Unfortunately, by the time they conclude this, it's too late.

It really does suck for the enlisted soldiers who are willing to give up their lives for this country and its benefits, such as freedom of speech and the press, only to have people speak crap about them and have the press demonize them.

You mean who are willing and ready to nuke and kill masses of people overseas for the $$$ benefit of our government. Let's not kid ourselves...

I agree that these soldiers come back are definitely affected and aren't treated like the vets from my great grandfather's generation but the war going on here today is much different than it was before the vietnam war. Most of these kids go to war because they can't afford a job that will provide them with the same kind of resources and benefits as someone who can. Some who join the military are under the same delusion that they're fighting for their country and making the world a better place until they realize it's nothing but warfare, killed or be killed.

There has always been great injustice in how America treats its veterans. They are forever marred by what they experience, and are not properly compensated for it.

The people I knew growing up who had any interest in joining the military fell almost exclusively into one of two categories:
1) Victims of the "economic draft." They aren't serving out of patriotism or a sense of duty. They got a raw deal under the current system, and their only chance at getting an education and hopefully escaping from the lower classes is to gamble with their lives by joining the military.
2) People who were entranced by some sort of false, romanticized militarism and want to blow stuff up.

I know there are people who join the military because they feel a sincere sense of duty or patriotism. But at least in my experience, they are vastly outnumbered by the senseless militarists and the economic draftees.

And I don't know how it is elsewhere in the country, but in my hometown veterans are revered as somehow above the rest of us. A lot of veterans seem to have that attitude too: that they're better than everyone else and entitled to what they want.

The media worships soldiers. You certainly don't turn on the evening news and see stories "demonizing" the troops. What's with the persecution complex?

We end up seeing a lot of American news footage, and the only ones demonizing the Soldiers are Fred Phelps and his gang.

Persecution complex? I'm not a veteran, so it's not persecution of me and thus not my complex. I had wanted to join up back in 2006, even when I had a couple jobs, but was turned down due to my diagnosis with Asperger's syndrome. My birth father was a helicopter mechanic in the US Army though, and he had served for nearly 2 years in the 70's and was honorably discharged for succeeding where Klinger couldn't (in convincing people he was loony, with his IQ of 188.)

Fuzzy, the press I was referring to are the samples in the first post including the profiling by the DHS, assuming that is a legitimate document.

At first glance, I found the video to be harmless, but I can see the issue.

If this was about how to deal with a difficult student, the whole "veteran" reference was irrelevant to the lesson.

For someone with poor grammar skills, his language did not reflect that (people normally write as they speak, not the other way around).

As it was posted elsewhere on this same topic (another board, IIRC), someone pointed out the question of what if they had used "negro" or "Hispanic" or "Asian" instead of "veteran?"

That really shows the thoughtlessness of the script, and it seems to imply that the script writer had a bias against veterans by putting that in there.

This student needs help with his written language skills. I watched the video, and what I saw was a student who has an attitude about improving his essay skills. He needs more time, to which he is not ready to commit. This is a very difficult person to reach, due to a personality challenge.

Neither Kerry nor Penn state are the media. It is the purpose of the media to relay what these talking heads have said, and this task does not equate with them saying or meaning the words themselves.

The people in the Penn state video are actors paid to speak their parts. They are no more speaking their minds than Silvester Stallone is a murderer for doing all his movies.

If an anchorperson tells you that a Norwegian tour bus drove off a cliff in Albuquerque, that doesnt mean they caused it. It doesnt mean they approve. No more than the weatherman causes the weather.

No, I am asking you for an example of a reporter/anchorperson saying "I love dead Wegies", figuratively speaking. Myself, I like em alive.

They are scared. If terrorists were half as competent as our veterans, that bomb in Time Square would have worked.

The aim of terrorists is to cause terror. Whether that bomb in Times Square worked or that jerk with a pantsfull of explosives blew up or not is of little consequence. More terror if it did but more people are more scared today than before. Mission accomplished.
