If we called it "double v", then we couldn't call Bush Jr. "Dub-ya". That's why.

Why would anyone WANT to call him that?
It was hard enough to live in a country where people call their president "Bill" [I was puzzled and bothereed by Ike].
My parents told me about a british couple they were friends with who came ove to visit my parents here- who were incredgilous that "here in America you have prominent people with names like "Bill- EEE Graham"!
God only knows what they would have thought years later of "Jim MEE Carter" ( even 'Bill" has more gravitas).
But "Dubya" was a linguistic necessity to distinquish between him and his dad (their presidencies were much closer in time than those of John Adams and son John Quincy Adams) and they both went to war with Iraq- so howz an early twenty first centurey american spose know which "bush who went to war in Iraq" a person is talking about?
I used to refer to them respectively as "the elder" or " the younger" Bush, until my Mom pointed out that the former is "where they get elder berries from."
We cant call him "King George II" so we had no choice but to call him "Dubya".
