You may have a point about ancient islam, but good luck selling it to current muslims.

religions change over time. a lot. There's plenty in the bible that most christian faiths ignore these days, and plenty that isn't in it that they adhere to.

I too come from a place where religion and culture has been so intertwined, you don't know where one starts and the other ends. Religion is used to justify culture, and culture is used to justify religion, and things can get messy. This is the way of the tribal middle east, and even though the veil predates Islam anyways, it is interesting to see it religiously exported out of the middle east even into places like America or France.

There is no such thing as Modern Islam. It has been ancient since it was invented by Mohammed. Islam has been a reactionary view and culture since 622 c.e.

There was a brief three hundred year period when it was not as bad as it could have been. For a brief time a light shined in Baghdad and Andalus.
