I was raised by an Irish family who is Roman Catholic. I went to a private school for eight years. Now i am just starting to return to church again. It would have meant a lot to my grandma's brother who was a Bishop. Now i am beginning to realize that church gets me some great advice and some of life's lessons.

I was raised a Lutheran, and am largely of German extraction. In adulthood, I hadn't completely cut my ties to the faith, but I had drifted apart for some time. Now that my wife and I have a daughter, we have gotten back into the swing of things, and consider Lutheranism a big part of our lives, today.

I was raised to be both racist and sexist - a Methodist. Since leaving my parents' home, I've made my own way in and out of Christian institutions - seminary, Catholic churches, Spiritualist churches, Fundie Evangelical churches, and the Presbyterian church (where I was elected Elder). From all of this, I've learned that religion itself is a meaningless burden inflicted upon those seeking a Higher Meaning to their lives. I've also learned that church is a great place to socialize and meet potential life-partners. Were it not for church and work, I'd have no social life at all.

I was raised a smartass.

That is because TV had been my utmost influence and that's where my role models came from. Also because for some reason when I started school being good at math was my defining characteristic.

It all started with teenage mutant ninja turtles and Donatello. I was supposed to follow that role model because I was supposedly smart. Then many other team genius characters appeared. Eventually lead me to the Brain and Dexter. Growing up I started getting other role models like Detective Goren and Gil Grissom.

Oh, my parents are Catholic , in theory.

I don't think I will ever stop being a smartass.

I was raised by a christian houlsehold and became a Christian myself. Plain and simple.

I'm Catholic & raised by my family to be a shallow wiseass.

Wiseass, maybe. Shallow, HELL NO!

Many Catholic folks in my area, most who have kids
are raising them to be shallow & judgemental
towards non-Catholics. Maybe it's because
the parents themselves were wired
to be judgemental & shallow.

Not to mention racism, sexism, and homophobia
run very high, but subtle, at the church I go to
and in the area around it.

I was raised as a Catholic and I have strayed from that path since I was a teen. I find that making sense out of life is futile. Sometimes s**t just happens and there's no grand scheme behind it. Sometimes I feel a certain way for no apparent reason or for a reason that has nothing to do with logic. What's even stranger is that I've never overcome my fears by logically convincing myself that I'm paranoid but by facing them enough and convincing myself through new experiences replacing the old. I think that's why religion has such an appeal and why things like experiencing God in a dream carries so much weight to them. Let's face it, we aren't logical beings and emotional experiences carry much more weight to us than logic. That's why anecdotes tend to have more appeal than statistics.

Hell, I'm not even atheist because I'm super rational. It's because I haven't experienced anything I can give God credit for.

I was raised Catholic. Some of it was okay but the teachings of eternal torment in Hell for sinners were very disturbing to me and turned me off.

I still contemplate spirituality but at this time I'm not really anchored to a particular religion. I did try the Episcopal church for a while. The people were very nice but the style of worship with phrase repetition and singing just didn't do anything for me.

I am curious about the Universalist Unitarian church I might visit them someday.
