I think it depends on how you define great and the time period you are looking at. Many have done great things during different eras, and many have sucked. Some were good for different reasons.

I personally remember that during the Reagan, Bush I, and Clinton years the economy seemed to be very good. I know we personally had no trouble. Now though, it's in the toilet.

Many presidents have won us wars, many have prevented wars.

Many have caused needed social change.

So, it just depends on your criteria.

Did Washington actually turn down the chance to be king?

I was under the impression that a limited monarchy (like that in the Commonwealth) was proposed and ultimately rejected, but I was unaware of it being offered to Washington. In any case, it's not like there was a chance to be all-powerful- Washington as president had more power than George III legally had (though George III had William Pitt the Younger in his pocket and wasn't above threats and bribery).

Some food for thoughts: besides Delano Roosevelt, most voted presidents ruled, all of them, more than one hundred years ago.

How could I not like a guy who put a silencer on his lever action rifle, so he could hunt varmints on his Long Island estate without annoying the neighbors? Politically, I'm not a fan, but I'd love to have known the guy.
