Who is Morgan Tsvangirai and why is he alive?

Following 2000 Mugabe has had one main opponent in Zimbabwe, Morgan Tsvangiri, an outspoken activist who for years has opposed Mugabe's rule. Every election cycle he runs against Mugabe and likely will next year in 2018 and contrary to one might believe Mugabe lets him enjoy electoral successes.

In 2000 for instance, he won 47% to 48% of the vote and in 2008 Mugabe officially lost to him, but clung onto power regardless. Why did he let himself lose that election and why is he still alive.

Mugabe always inflicts violence on his supporters and family but somehow never disposes of Morgan once and for all. Why is that, according to Wikileaks after all he has been involved in coups against Mugabe?

Who knows? It could be many reasons.

Maybe he has a bunch of armed supporters who would rout Mugabe supporters. Maybe Tsvangirai "has something" on Mugabe. We can speculate all we want. Especially people who have knowledge of the situation.

Maybe this guy has so much support that killing him would incite a nationwide riot.

Maybe he has copies of Mugabe's tax returns.

Fossil Mugabe should have been out long ago! He's been in charge there for 37 years. It's never a good thing for any leader to outstay their welcome like that.

He screwed the whole thing up from the start.

Dictators often have "show trials", and the like to pretend to follow the rule of law.

He probably tolerates Tsvangirai as a "show" opposition candidate in the country's sham elections in order to give the appearance of democracy.

He would probably love to shoot Tsvangirai, or imprison him, but the activist is too well known to the world for Mugabe to do anything to him without global outrage. So Mugabe probably makes a virtue out of necessity, and lets his nemesis run in the elections, and Mugabe simply stuffs the ballot boxes to guarantee that Mugabe always beats him.
