2012 Olympics Logo Outrage in Iran
http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blogs/wor ... cle/34515/
The Iranian government has lodged a formal protest with the International Olympic Committee over the four-year-old logo, claiming that it must be changed since it spells out the word 'Zion'.
And the Middle Eastern nation has warned that it will order its athletes to stay at home next summer unless the logo is replaced and its creators asked to explain themselves.
"As internet documents have proved, using the word Zion in the logo of the 2012 Olympic Games is a disgracing action and against the Olympics' valuable mottos," the Iranian government wrote in a letter to the IOC, which was released via the state-backed Iranian Students Agency.
"There is no doubt that negligence of the issue from your side may affect the presence of some countries in the Games, especially Iran which abides by commitment to the values and principles."
It's not the first time that the logo has been at the centre of an unusual complaint: it has been heavily criticised ever since first being unveiled in 2007, and has been compared to everything from a swastika to a stylised image of two people making love.
It looks more like Lisa Simpson performing a lewd act than "Zion", but they're half right.. it should be removed post-haste, but mostly because its a hideous mess. They didn't need another reason.

If it offends the Iranian Government that much, that's a good reason for keeping it.

Who cares what the Iranian Government thinks, in fact their being offended by it gives a good reason to keep it.

Can anybody actually see "Zion" in it? Its supposed to say "2012", but like a magic eye picture, its not very obvious. The 201 could I suppose look a little like ZIO, but its a push to say the second 2 looks like an N.
Is there any other reason Iran might want out of the Olympics, because they've had a couple of years to "notice" this? I can think of a couple of good reasons why we should be out of it, but not that finding "Zion" in the logo would help.

I like being in agreement with you

You can safely assume that you've created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do
Shut up Ahmadinejad and go away.
Maybe we should drop thousands of fliers with that logo into Iran and watch Ahmadinejad go bananas, granted he is already insane but whatever.
I think Iran should grow up and just go to the Olympics regardless if something looks like Picasso's depiction of "Zion" or not. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be as tolerant to any other country who would be offended by their Olympics logo, if they even ever host an Olympics of any kind (Winter Olympics anyone? lol). Their country isn't exactly prized for their tolerance, and their ruler probably won't be happy until all Israelis and freedom are annihilated from the face of the earth. Could they think of something better for a logo? Maybe they're just compensating for something. I also really hate it when Iranian athletes refuse to compete against Israeli athletes. Remember Arash Miresmaeli? What an unsportsmanlike move.
