US Military Returns to Philippines
"distinction without a difference" are you in politics? That statement is full of smoke & mirrors.
Your original post said one thing. That one thing is NOT true.
As for what the prevailing feelings were back then, it was not a factor as the volcano made it a moot point. As for what the prevailing feelings are now, Congress might take it into consideration, but there are MANY factors higher-up than the feelings/wants of a 3rd world nation.

From the source article.
"Such cooperative efforts would as well result in achieving a balance of influence to ensure peace, stability, and economic development in the region," he said.
Nevertheless, del Rosario and other officials emphasised there were no plans to allow a return of the large-scale US military bases that existed in the Philippines until 1992, when Filipino senators voted to close them down.

In any case I'm not all that surprised. I think there will be a clash between the US and the PRC eventually
I hope we can count on Canada's support if it comes to that.
We're gonna need the whole world if we want to accomplish anything against China. We have the technology; they have the manpower and money. I don't think we'll get any farther in a conventional war with the PRC than we did in Korea. Just years of bloody stalemate like WWI.

It’s not the capability of our military or war industry that I’d have concern with in a war with China but rather the peaceniks of this country and their timid minded politicians.

What war industry? You are living in a fantasy world.

“Suspect electronic parts from China were installed on military systems and subsystems that were manufactured by Raytheon Co., L-3 Communications and Boeing,” said a memo from the committee’s staff, released yesterday before a hearing today.
“There is a flood of counterfeits and it is putting our military men and risk and costing us a fortune,” committee Chairman Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat, said. None of the examples found by the committee were connected to lives lost or dramatic failures causing an aircraft crash, and the companies involved cooperated with the investigation, he said.
China's best weapon is American greed and stupidity.

I'm not sure I understand. So you think because Raytheon bought shitty airplane parts from China means we don't have our own arms industry?

Not one INDEPENDENT of Chinese suppliers, no we do not. That's a problem.
If you cannot go from raw material to weapons you don't have a viable wartime arms industry. The US might still assemble its own weapons but we have NOTHING like an actual, credible, independent arms industry.

The Navy Bought Fake Chinese Microchips That Could Have Disarmed U.S. Missiles
Wired reports the chips weren't only low-quality fakes, they had been made with a "back-door" and could have been remotely shut down at any time.
If left undiscovered the result could have rendered useless U.S. missiles and killed the signal from aircraft that tells everyone whether it's friend or foe.
Apparently foreign chip makers are often better at making cheap microchips and U.S. defense contractors are loathe to pass up the better deal.
The problem remains with these "trojan-horse" circuits that can be built into the chip and are almost impossible to detect -- especially without the original plans to compare them to.
The Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Agency (IARPA) is now looking for ways to check the chips to make sure they haven't been hacked in the production process.
Expect to see a whole lot more funding directed to this goal. Or, considering IARPA is the research and development section of the intelligence community -- expect the money to be spent -- don't expect to see where.
There's also reason to believe that Chinese manufacturers are including these trojan-horse chips in general consumer electronics too--computers, smartphones, tablets, etc... Last I heard, the US military used all that stuff.
There's no such thing as an "American arms industry" anymore. The military parts supply chain is so globalized that we cannot keep Chinese parts out of it.

Then you would be sending the american military to die.
Look at history, the Germans and Russians on the Eastern Front in WWII. The Chinese have numbers on their side to a massive extent, the American military wouldn't be able to kill them fast enough.
The Chinese wouldn't do very well either, America would be hell to invade. Too many people are well armed and would fight. They wouldn't be nearly as effective as the military (in most cases) but the American people would still be a serious thorn in the side of any invasion force.
To think that America and China could fight any kind of conventional war is just dumb. Nukes could be used, but it would likely turn the rest of the world in to fighting whichever side used them first. The only realistic result is massive death toll for nothing.

I really think that if any serious threats come from Iran or China that we really should be espionage first. I don't care how many neat new toys we think we might have, there's nothing that justifies the mess.
