Yeah so absurd for the federal government to spend any funds helping the poor, with having meals....

It's not even worth discussing the specifics of proposed budget outline because that's all it is, a starting point for negotiations that will be debated in congress. Meals on Wheels is not even a federal program, it gets funding from a lot of places mostly from private donations. The proposed cuts do not cut majority of funding it gets from the feds either which comes from HHS.

Even Mother Jones is calling this BS

Anybody willing to admit they've been duped by fake news?

It's not fake news...Meals on wheels was deliberately left out of the budget to skim 3% of their budget coming from the feds. Coincidentally the press release has resulted in an increase in private donations to meals on wheels which obviously is what the Trump "bean counters" were anticipating.

This is typical right wing ideology to make not for profit, NGOs and charity organisations more "self reliant" to divert money to tax cuts for the rich or (what is ludicrous) pump the money into buying weapons...

Meals on Wheels is not about helping "poor people", just "elderly people".

The debt to do this is being pushed onto millennials to pay for super-rich baby boomers , who could just pick up the phone and order home-delivered food themselves.

Again, majority of federal funding was not effected which comes thru HHS not HUD. What this budget proposal did was eliminate 'community development block grants' which aren't specifically earmarked for Meals On Wheels at all but rather to discretion of the grantees some of which used a portion of this funding for Meals On Wheels. False and purposely misleading headlines are fake news, you've been duped.

The media has been trying to stir up a moral panic about Trump for soon to be 2 years now and have publicly stated that they do not care about the facts or any sort of ethics in doing so, this same media are the ones who stoke the fires of racial tension. These are not journalists, they are enemy propagandists and psyops aimed at manipulating the American electorate. Look at how much money was spent on Hillary Clinton's campaign and then compare that to what Trump spent, they invested so much in rigging the political process and now they're totally lost & desperate.

And yet the elderly people who make use of it are more likely than not poor, and often physically infirmed.

If Trump cuts Meals on Wheels, he has no compassion, period.

Senior citizens are entitled to our respect and to be taken care of if needed.

I would suppose that most that can afford take out order take out.Meals on wheels is healthy, but tastes like hospital food.I doubt people eat it unless they have to.Maybe a few wealthy tight wads get it to save a few bucks. They should chip on a few bucks for the service of they can afford it.
It really does help the housebound. Some maybe are just to tired to fix a decent meal, some have special diets, like diabetics and this helps them stay healthy and at home. For some with the beginnings of dementia it might not be safe for them to use a stove anymore.
For some older folks it could also be a matter of safety, they may have no one to check up on them.

Meals on Wheels isn't funded by the federal government. Some of the money that is used at state level may come from federal block grants but the state decides how the grant money is spent. In other words Trump cannot cut meals on wheels because it's not federal.

Just more mudslinging and rabble rousing from the left, which we'll continue to see for the next 4-8 years...

First-of-all, this is a PROPOSED budget----it has to go-through alot of steps, before it's approved!!

Secondly, he is proposing a REDUCTION, in funds----he is NOT proposing to cut it out, ENTIRELY!!

The budget proposal also contains no funding for public television, so no more money for Sesame Street, who have helped prepare low-income children to enter school for decades.

With regard to the healthcare, the new plan will make it easy for middle class people to not pay for insurance, and then pay a nominal fee to re-enroll if they have a significant health incident. That will not be the case for anyone living paycheck to paycheck, as the penalty will exceed the median monthly wage for the US.

It's true, states can cover the difference, but the feds contribute between 5 and 10 percent of Meals on Wheels budget. Remember, we waste at least half of the food we produce in the US. A real renegade would make that connection, and it would do a lot for the rural working poor. People with well-developed communities will have no problem making ends meet, but any community which has been under attack by predatory lending, predatory police, predatory landlords, failed public housing schemes, etc. probably will not make ends meet.

I can't tell if Trump's cabinet is actively hostile toward poor people, or simply clueless and hypnotized by their own rhetoric. His supporters may start to realize just how many people they like weren't standing on their own two feet to the extent that they had believed.

The Meals on Wheels cuts are changing to block grants. Previously, the bills contained a requirement to make specific expenditures, while giving extra money for other things. I don't know what else, actually. Let me know if anything on that list will negatively impact rich people. Did the funding get cut for the Orange County Opera, or something?

Ugh, you really don't know what your are talking about. PBS seriously does not need federal funding, it can get more than enough money from private donations and advertisements like any other channel. Same is true for NPR. Couldn't be happier they are eliminating the NEA. We actually have real needs that need addressing, this is a waste of money.

What you said about block grants doesn't make any sense whatsoever, they are getting rid of the CDBGs from HUD which do not fund Meals on Wheels. Meals on Wheels gets most of their funding from HHS under the Older Americans Act.

I think there's a degree of hatred and contempt for poor people among the Trump crew, as they believe the poor are getting a free ride, without realizing it's stuff like meals on wheels, and various subsidies, or they just don't eat. Then again, too many conservatives will tell you: take away benefits the poor survive on, and you'll see how fast they become self sufficient. Maybe, or you might see how quickly they die. Then again, too many conservatives wouldn't mind that outcome, either.

Trump Budget Could Mean End For PA LIHEAP Program:

LIHEAP is the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which provides families $200-300 a year so they don’t lose utility service.

Some 75,000 Philadelphians rely on it to stay warm and avert tragedies such as carbon monoxide poisoning, or fires caused by unsafe heat sources.

Community Legal Services attorney Maripat Pileggi helps families sign up.

“More than half of the families who received LIHEAP last year included people with disabilities, someone who’s elderly, or very young children,” she said.

Pileggi says the program is particularly important in Pennsylvania, where low-income people generally pay 17% of their income on utilities– more than other states.

Good luck convincing Trump he should stay in the White House, and actually do something for someone else.

Just proposing it is downright crappy. Most of the older folks voted for him.Now he back stabs them.
My state ranks number one in senior hunger. Not something you want to come in first for. Most older folks here are living below the poverty level so it's doubtful rich folks are abusing the program. Most of the meals on wheels sites I looked at have income guidelines,so no people are not milking the tit of the federal government for a crappy slab of meatloaf and a white bread roll. There is some federal funding for the program,it may not make a difference in the wealthier states if it gets cut.But here, any loss of funding will hurt.We don't have that much money on the state level to work with.
There seems to be a trend in phasing out help to the most vulnerable seniors.
