Baltimore: ALL Confederate Statues Have Now Been Removed
That's actually a good idea.
We shouldn't destroy historical artifacts. We should just place them in their proper context.
By putting these statues up in public, we are implying that these men were fighting for a good cause. Therefore, the neo-confederates are creating a fake version of history in the name of "preserving history".
Imagine if Italians tried to "preserve Italian history" like neo-Confederates. They would be trying to put Nero coins back into circulation.
In modern Italy, Nero coins can be found in museums, but they aren't used as currency. After all, we want to remember Nero, but we don't want to pretend that he was a decent guy.

Dispute over Thomas Jefferson statue at Hofstra University
A counter petition also has been launched, arguing that while Jefferson might have been flawed, he helped establish American independence and the statute should remain and be “a conversation starter.”
The removal petition was posted on change.org about one week ago and 500 people had signed in support as of 9 a.m. Wednesday.
The petition against removal was created at 10 p.m. Tuesday and had 50 supporters by 9 a.m. Wednesday.
The university released a statement Wednesday reading: “The right to peaceful protest and assembly is at the core of our democracy.
The Jefferson statue stands just inside the entrance to the university off Hempstead Turnpike and has been the subject of protest in the past.
It was the scene of a demonstration in 2004 in which students then demanded removal of the statue, according to the Hofstra Chronicle, the student newspaper.

Students at Carleton University Are Trying to Have a Statue of Gandhi Removed
Gandhi has been described as a visionary and a pioneer of nonviolent protest. But some critics describe him as a racist against black Africans and a misogynist.
Every winter, a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Carleton University is affectionately adorned with hats and scarves to keep it from getting too cold.
But this tribute is a lie, say a growing number of critics, who are demanding the university remove the statue of the Indian activist. They say despite his admirable reputation, Gandhi was also a misogynist, a racist towards black Africans and a supporter of the caste system in India.

I think it's a shame his detractors don't want to remember the positive things Gandhi did for the world. Afrocentricism is almost as bad as white supremacy.
But that's fair enough, if that's what people feel then it's better his statue is removed. His legacy achieved what it was mean't to

This is an example of political correctness gone mad. Context people! Context!
Did Jefferson own slaves? Yes, he did.
That being said, Jefferson was an enemy of the British Empire, which was quite possibly the most evil country in history.
No human being is perfect. The American revolutionaries were the lesser of two evils.
We shouldn't deify or monstrify the American Founding Fathers. We should recognize that they were flawed human beings who were up against a far greater evil.
I imagine that this statue of Jefferson at the Hofstra University represents Thomas Jefferson's secularism and intellectual prowess, given that it is at a university. If a statue of Jefferson were built in a black neighborhood or a Native American reservation, that would likely send a different message. That would be inappropriate.
Jefferson is not even remotely comparable to Robert E. Lee. Jefferson owned slaves at a time when hardly anyone questioned the practice. Lee tried to keep slavery legal at a time when it was being dismantled.
In other words, hating Jefferson for his racism is like hating Martin Luther King for his homophobia or hating Charles Darwin for his use of the word "Negro".

Bollocks.
There is a huge difference between destroying a statue and wiping Jefferson from history. I don't like these people either, but they aren't erasing history by taking a statue down.

I'm glad that people are seeing Gandhi as a flawed human being. I'm absolutely sick of people who treat Gandhi as a perfect deity. I think that we can only truly see beauty in Gandhi's life if we see him as one of us.
That being said, Gandhi was up against a much greater evil. We should remember that before we crap all over India's George Washington.
By the way ... Gandhi was a misogynist? Really?
"To call woman the weaker sex is a libel; it is man's injustice to woman. If by strength is meant brute strength, then, indeed, is woman less brute than man. If by strength is meant moral power, then woman is immeasurably man's superior. Has she not greater intuition, is she not more self-sacrificing, has she not greater powers of endurance, has she not greater courage? Without her, man could not be. If nonviolence is the law of our being, the future is with woman. Who can make a more effective appeal to the heart than woman?"

...Yes. At the time we were single-digit aged, ASPO, " Negro " was the correct/polite term for an ethnically sub-saharan African person.

What if removing statues is just the start?
"Negro" is just the Spanish word for black.
It wasn't originally a slur ... but it became a slur because people used it like a slur.
A perfectly innocent word can sometimes become a slur if enough people use it like one.

I didn't hear "negro" much after 1970; it became an insult.
It sucks how we still don't have a word for black people that works in every context.
Some people hate hearing the term "black people". Other people hate hearing the term "people of color".
This says a lot about our society. Our society is heavily divided, since we are in a state of rapid social transition. We can't even agree on what people of sub-Saharan African descent should be called in everyday conversation.

I never said that I wanted the statue the be taken down. I just pointed out that removing the statue would not be "erasing history". This isn't really that big a deal.
Slipper slope is a logical fallacy anyway.

The plethora of things that have been coined a logical fallacy makes that system essentially worthless. I'm sure there's one for what I just said as well.
